Finland is a large, sparsely populated country that features barren Arctic landscapes in the North, thousands of tiny islands in the South, vast, unspoiled forests, crystal clear lakes in between – there are roughly 187,000 of them – and one of Europe's most fashionable capitals in Helsinki, Finland holidays are both breathtaking and precious.

What to do in Finland

During your holiday in Finland, you may stay in a Glass Igloo or Aurora Bubble, under the Night Sky and you will be able to see the Northern Lights from your own personal igloo with all modern comforts.

Or try the world famous Ice Hotel: Finland has it all. Finland's Northern Lights, surrounded by vast forests of trees, truly capture the wonder of the Far North. The combination of snow around you, the Finland Northern Lights, the atmosphere of Finland Christmas holidays or New Year holidays in Finland guarantee an outstanding experience.

More about Finland Holidays & Holiday Itineraries

What Is Finland Famous For?

Finland is wold-known as the homeland of Nokia, famous for its educational system, popular for tourists hunting the Northern Lights adventures, outstanding landscapes, and cleanest air, and the Santa Claus village, amongst other attractions. Finland is known as "the country of a thousand lakes" for its impressive number of over 168,000 lakes spread across the country, but also as "the land of the Midnight Sun" for its golden light nights from mid-May to mid-August.

Why Visit Finland?

There is a lot of mystery as well as many attractions in the Finnish Arctic, such as the Northern Lights and every child’s dream to meet Father Christmas. Days are spent enjoying the frosty climate, while evenings are for soothing saunas and crackling fires and looking out for the Aurora Borealis. The concept of the iconic Northern Lights Igloo is a relatively new phenomenon but works beautifully making it the perfect destination for tourists chasing wildlife holidays.

We can also offer Finland Skiing and Skiing holidays in Finland are fascinating with snow normally well into April. Finland Christmas Holidays and Finland New Year Holidays are also recommended.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Finland?

Finland is a country for all seasons, and the best time to visit Finland depends on the regions you are looking to travel to. Aurora borealis and snow mostly occur in Northern and Eastern Finland between December and April. The long summer months run between June and late August, with Midnight Suns appearing in June. This will provide a fantastic time to travel to Helsinki and Lakeland for Finland's fly-driving holidays.

The winter season for Finland holidays is just the best time to appreciate the scenery, take a moment to look through our range of Finland holiday packages to choose from.

Finland has wide open landscapes and vast forests, over 180,000 lakes, and 37 national parks. In eastern Finnish forests, ancient Taiga forests are habitat for brown bears, wolverines, lynxes and other native fauna and Lakeland with thousands of beautiful waters and serene lakes.

Finnish Lapland is a winter wonderland with sweeping falls with thick snow blanket and spectacular views, as well as herds of sheep tended by native Sami. Summer brings a wide array of art and music festivals, some more traditional than others, like the Savonlinna Opera Festival or Pori Jazz Festival, an ideal time to book your holidays to Finland. There are some real quirky activities that take place during our Finland summer holidays as well, such as the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships, the annual Wife-carrying competition in Sonkajärvi and swamp football in Hyrynsalmi.

After a long, dark winter, the Finns really look forward to the summer and create a very friendly and enjoyable atmosphere for all. Or consider booking the unforgettable Finnish Lapland Aurora Borealis holiday, which is a popular choice for tourists all over the world that are looking to see the Northern Lights during late summer and autumn.

Are Backpacking Holidays Popular in Finland?

Finland is one of the most underrated holiday destinations in Europe, but that is precisely what makes it an attractive destination for backpacking and hiking experiences, since you will be bathing in its spectacular nature while avoiding the crowds. Finland hiking holidays give you the opportunity to explore this beautiful wilderness, away from the crowd and deep into its ancient forests and crystalline lakes. Finland's vast forest and lakes interrupted with small towns and villages are perfect for summer trips, especially in the North where the sunlight never sets during ten weeks at the end of the summer.

How to Get Around in Finland?

Finland has a variety of transportation options that backpackers can use to get around the country. These include biking, walking, car rentals, buses, and trains.

Biking is a great way to explore the country by yourself or with a group of friends. It's also an environmentally friendly option that doesn't require much infrastructure.

Walking is another great way to explore the countryside without having to worry about getting lost or dealing with traffic congestion. You can take walks in any part of Finland—even in the city—and there are usually plenty of trails available for pedestrians to follow.

Cars offer convenience for tourists and commuters alike; they're easy to use and provide access to almost everywhere in Finland. If you're looking for something more exclusive than public transport or just want some peace and quiet while traveling through Finnish towns and villages, renting a car might be your best bet.

Bus travel is very convenient if you need to get from one major city centre to another quickly, and it is affordable alternative to car renting.

Train travel is also a great way to see the country on a slow but scenic trip, and you can get up in the beautiful countryside. Trains also offer great views of Finnish towns and villages as they go by, making for an unforgettable backpacking experience.

What Is the Climate Like in Finland?

The climate conditions of Finland are temperate, which means that there is a moderate to cool weather with four seasons. The average temperature ranges from about -5 degrees Celsius in winter to about 25 degrees Celsius in summer. There's usually some rain or snowfall throughout the year but on average it's quite dry most of the time.

Hi Inga

Yes back and settled now thanks, but already missing Russia!  The trip was excellent thanks, St.Petersburg and Moscow are both incredible places. Everything went smoothly and felt well organised, the tour guides were really good, knowledgeable and helpful. The excursions were good and meant I got to fit a lot into the time. Hotels were also good, not quite as good in Moscow, but still fine and in a good location. I would definitely recommend the trip to other people!

I'll send a couple of photos separately

Thanks

Rich

Thank you for organising such an interesting holiday for us. All the travel arrangements went smoothly.
We enjoyed our time watching the bears, we saw 3 different ones coming and going during the night. We appreciated being in our "own" little hide, even if it was small and primitive!
We had an enjoyable day in Kuhmo, very much on our own initiative, the Hotel did not really suggest much to visit ,we discovered the Winter War Museum right on the door step through our own readings.
Most people we met in Finland were amazingly friendly and none of them had seen bears!
Thank you.

Hi Saija!

He just came in to store – he had such an amazing time! He said the trips were perfect and the people were lovely and took him for a bbq in the woods!

The only downside was that they had no hot water for the entire stay and because it was a public holiday, they couldn’t get a plumber!

He said that the owner was so great and hospitable and assured him that he would provide a partial refund through yourselves – could you possibly check in with the owner for me!

Other than that, everything ran smoothly and I would love to use Baltic Travel for any more enquiry we get in the store J

Thanks,

Hayley

Dear Inga

Andy and I are back from our Finland/Sweden trip and we've had a great time.  We enjoyed both Helsinki and Stockholm, but our favourite place was Kemi.  We loved the Sampo Icebreaker experience (especially the swim), walking on the frozen sea, and meeting Father Christmas and a Sailor Elf (we're sure he's a real one!) in Santa's Seaside Office.  We were warmly welcomed at the Merihovi and enjoyed their old-fashioned hospitality. On the face of it, Kemi seems a place with little to do, but we'd have been happy to spend another couple of days there on the ice under blue skies in such a friendly town where so many people were happy to stop and chat.

By far the best hotel was the Fabian in Helsinki.  It's extremely stylish, comfortable, the staff bend over backwards to help in every way, and when we came back from Kemi it was like coming home. For our final night they gave us a bigger room that the original one, which was a nice touch, and our stored bags had been taken up for us. The staff without exception are charming and nothing is too much trouble. The breakfast is superb (I became a porridge lover - served with great spoonfuls of Finnish berries on top, it's delicious).  The location couldn't be better - very quiet, but just a short walk from the Esplanade and the harbour.

We were lucky to discover just before our holiday that there was a concert in the Rock Church while we were in Helsinki, so that was a treat for us, as we always try to find either a musical or a sporting event when we're travelling.

In addition, we preferred the personal touches at the Merihovi and the Fabian - smaller, non-chain hotels, which are much more our style and where we felt much more at home.

All the arrangements you made for us were impeccable and travel went extremely smoothly.  We thoroughly enjoyed the Silja crossing from Helsinki to Stockholm.  The one thing we wouldn't repeat is the night train, not because there was anything wrong with the service, it's just that we got very little sleep as the train stopped and started many times during the night, and we're not people who can lay down our heads and sleep anywhere!  We'll put that down to experience and avoid overnight rail travel in the future.

We're already starting to think about another trip north next year, somewhere further and colder!  We'll be keeping an eye on your Facebook posts and your web site, as we'll be very happy for you to arrange us a third holiday.

Dear Lena

We had a great trip to Finland.

Nellim is wonderful. The food and staff are brilliant. Minka is an excellent manager always smiling and Periita her daughter likewise.

Wearing of traditional costume is very popular with the guests and so they were much in demand for photographs.

The equipment provided, i.e. Boots, gloves, snowsuits, skis, snow mobiles etc are all of the highest quality. Similarly the rooms are very well appointed. It does feel as if a considerable investment has been made into the property.

Many thanks to you as well for all your help in booking Nellim and our excursions.

Kind regards Tina and Peter
