Holidays in Kosovo & Tour Packages

  By Balkan Exp

This landlocked country, the second newest country in the world after South Sudan, also shares its history with the Balkan region it sits at the centre of. Before it became a nation, before Kosovo holidays became possible, there were many events that pave4d the way for the country's fate today.

A country claimed by both Albania and Serbia, Kosovo is half the size of Wales and less than half the size of New Hampshire, U.S.A. Its population of under 2,000,000 comprises between 88% and 92% Albanian, dependent on which census you credit, which might lead one to question the Serbian claim.

However, many Serbians fled or were expelled during the conflict of the 1990s and Kosovo, or more specifically, Kosovo Polije, the Field of Blackbirds, where a combined Balkan force was narrowly defeated by the armies of the Ottoman Sultan Murad in 1389, is still a rallying cry for Serbian nationalists.

With evidence of human habitation dating back to Palaeolithic times, Kosovo was a centre for the Illyrian civilisation of the 11th and 10th centuries B.C.; was strongly influenced by the coastal Greeks and fell under Roman sway in the 2nd century B.C. Where Kosovo's capital, Pristina now lies, the Roman city of Ulpiana grew on the remains of an Illyrian city of the same name and was fortified by the Roman Emperor Justinian in 518 A.D.

More about Holidays in Kosovo & Tour Packages

Successful waves of Slavs colonised the area and continued to develop Kosovo as part of the medieval Serbian Empire, until the above-mentioned defeat.

Under the Ottomans, Kosovo became a substantial villayet or province, far larger than its current size, but with the fall of that Empire, Kosovo became the centre first of the Young Turks rebellion of 1908 and then a focus for Albanian nationalism. An autonomous region in Tito's Yugoslavia, in the 1980s Kosovo wearied of Serbian domination once Yugoslavia disintegrated and the rest is recent history.

In an amazing renaissance landscape, Kosovo holidays are ever-growing in popularity and the value for a trip here is exceptional. Kosovo now welcomes intrepid travellers to a country where many roads have met and architectural styles of the last 2,000 years still can be viewed, Kosovo holidays are ideal for the traveller that wants to see a hidden treasure and experience a very warm culture they may not have known of before.

Where to go in Kosovo

A drive through the Kosovar Rugova Valley is a great introduction to this fascinating country of mountains, waterfalls and great walks off the beaten track. With two mountain ranges, there is plenty to satisfy the most ardent climber or the gentle walker.

Visit the Serbian Orthodox monastery of Visoki Decani, built in the early 14th Century, still occupied by 25 monks and guarded by NATO forces. A more tranquil place it would be difficult to find.

Pristina is the administrative centre for Kosovo and has an Old Town with traditional Ottoman buildings, including the Imperial Mosque dating back to 1461.

Prizren is the jewel of Kosovo. This bustling second city is filled with mosques and churches, both Roman Catholic and Orthodox. Climb the gentle hill to the fortress; cross the Ottoman era stone bridge and settle into one of the many multi-ethnic restaurants in this beguiling city.

We provide city breaks in Kosovo which included guided tours of the cities, our Kosovo holidays and city breaks are tailored to give you a true taste of the city life in this great nation.

We know Kosovo and we can take you there.
