Train Journeys Finland

  By VisitFinland

Finland is a huge country. So travelling by train is a great way to see plenty of it through the wide, panoramic windows, especially during the summer when the Midnight Sun is prevalent. You’ll be free of traffic, and trains let you move around inside, compared with a coach or being strapped to a car seat.

Modern trains enable you to travel quickly and comfortably to almost any destination in Finland. You can sit back and relax with a delicious meal in a restaurant car and get a good night’s sleep in a comfy sleeping car. Or you can just watch the scenic Finnish landscape pass by as you are making your way to your exotic new destination.

The national railway company of Finland, VR, has excellent InterCity trains on the most popular tracks. And long distance trains offer all kinds of facilities. There are services for wheelchairs, family compartments, play spaces for children, deposit-operated bicycle and ski locks, luggage lockers, a telephone booth for mobile phone callers, a compartment for passengers with pets. And there’s even a smokers’ booth and a compartment for allergy sufferers. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, a family or a group, everyone will be taken care of.

The easiest way to reach northern activities is to use a night train to Lapland. You’ll travel first to Oulu, Kemi, Kolari, Rovaniemi or Kemijärvi and then hop on a TrainBus.

Nature lovers will find themselves transported to paradise. Vast expanses of unspoilt natural scenery, including forests, lakes, and islands lie between vibrant, exciting cities like the capital Helsinki.  And you can travel all the way north to Kolari, well beyond the Arctic Circle, to get a glimpse of the magnificent Northern Lights.

You can travel easily to and from Helsinki-Vantaa Airport via the Ring Rail Line and commuter train traffic. You can also transfer to and from long-distance trains when travelling to the airport.

Finland trains are perfect for groups. You can book your own compartment or even your own car to make best use of your time, whether you wish to work or just spend time with your friends or family.

And to cap it all, trains are a very green form of transport. Train travel produces less emissions and uses less energy than other forms of transport. So you can enjoy a wonderful touring holiday whilst knowing that you’re not leaving a big carbon footprint in your wake.
