Norway is a fascinating place to visit year-round, with the polar winter this far north in the Nordics a perfect setting to see the magical beauty of the Northern Lights up close and in person. In stark contrast, the warmer summer months and the Midnight Sun mean Norway enjoys brighter, longer days, where you can discover charming fishing villages, gorgeous architecture, or embrace the Norwegian outdoor lifestyle.

Norway Northern Lights Holidays

Norway trip packages in the winter are in high demand, offering a fantastic opportunity to see the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. One of nature's most remarkable phenomena, the lights illuminate the dark night skies, dancing overhead and providing a display that is equal parts mesmerising and mystical.

Our Northern Lights tours are varied, ranging from rustic escapes to luxury wilderness cabins and guided Aurora chases. You can see the lights from a husky sled, on snowshoes or during a snowmobile tour over snowy trails or watch from the comfort of a relaxing hotel with Nordic spa facilities and fine dining.

Fjord Cruises & Coastal Packages

The deep, icy fjords and staggeringly wild coastlines of Norway are distinctive, with soaring glaciers, icebergs, and even polar bears roaming the snow in areas like Svalbard. Taking to the water is a chance to see Norway like never before, whether onboard a well-appointed cruise ship with your own private cabin, or on an authentic Arctic expedition far from everyday life.

Norway's remote landscapes are awe-inspiring, with voyages that take you to tiny villages with ancient Stone Age ruins, stop-offs to sample local delicacies or enjoy hiking and kayaking, and visits to some of the country's most famous outlying islands, including Kirkenes where you can try a King Crab safari, snowmobiling and even stay overnight in a Snow Hotel.

Norway Holiday Package FAQs

1. How bespoke are the Baltic Travel Company's tailor-made Norway package holidays?

While you'll find detailed itineraries & optional excursions on every package, we can adapt many elements of your Norway holiday on request. You might, for instance, like to upgrade to premium accommodation, would love help organising a stay in an authentic rorbuer (fishermen's) hut on the Lofoten Islands or wish to add extra nights in Tromsø to ensure you have a thorough Northern Lights hunt.

2. What level of support is included in my Norwegian package holiday?

All Norway holiday packages include 24/7 UK-based emergency support and are carefully designed in collaboration with our local hoteliers, guides, and travel partners in Norway. If you need help rearranging a missed ferry, swapping a pre-selected snowmobile tour for an ice cave hike, or sourcing missing thermal clothing, our team is on hand to assist.

3. Are meals and accommodations selected for local authenticity?

Each package page offers details about inclusions and exclusions. Still, many of our Norway holiday packages feature hand-picked eco-lodges, farm-stay cottages, and boutique hotels with all catering included. Guests can also pick holidays where they can explore local towns independently to try Norwegian fårikål lamb stews, sample complimentary fireside snacks during late-night Aurora excursions or request help organising private wine tastings.

4. Can I include unique experiences like dog sledding and ice-cave hikes?

Of course! Guests often dream of a dog sled ride under the Arctic sky or a guided ice cave trek, and we can advise on Norway trip packages that incorporate these off-the-beaten-path adventures.

5. How quickly will I receive my Norway itinerary and quote?

You'll receive a detailed, personalised Norway itinerary and firm quote within 24 hours of enquiry. Clients often comment on our “lightning-fast turnaround” and the clarity of the information and travel details we provide.

6. Do the Baltic Travel Company's Norway package holidays include international flights?

Many do, yes, although there are some independent travel packages. Most of our Norway ATOL or ABTOT-protected tourism packages have flight-inclusive options, making your journey seamless and stress-free.

7. What group sizes are typical on Baltic Travel Company's tailor-made Norway tours?

Bespoke Norway tours can be arranged for parties of any size, with the most popular option being to arrange holidays for 4 to 12 travellers. Custom tours are a wholly personal experience, allowing you to spend quality time with your loved ones, whether travelling with a partner or an extended family.

8. Can I plan a multi-destination Norway trip, for example Tromsø, Lofoten and Svalbard?

Yes. Some of our highest demand extended Arctic Island Retreats combine Tromsø, the Lofoten Islands, Bodø, and Svalbard, with smooth transfers by boat, train, and road to ensure you discover the best of Norway's incredible regions.

9. Are family-friendly options available in the Baltic Travel Company's Norway trip packages?

Absolutely. Our Norway family holiday ideas are curated for families with little ones and bigger kids, featuring popular activities like fjord lunch cruises and cable-car rides, complemented by thrilling but safe experiences, such as whale-watching and reindeer sledding, all under expert guidance.

10. How does the Baltic Travel Company maximise my chances of seeing the Northern Lights?

Aurora-hunting flexibility is an important part of your Norwegian package holiday. If the weather is poor in Tromsø, for instance, we'll provide an opportunity to reschedule your Aurora chase for the following evening or another night during your stay when the forecast is clear. If you're travelling around Norway, we might also suggest reorganising your Northern Lights excursion at another stopping-off point.

11. What happens if an activity is cancelled due to weather?

Should conditions force a cancellation, such as rough seas making a whale-watching cruise unsafe, we'll do everything possible to rearrange or offer an alternative, for example, a fjord sightseeing tour. If this is not feasible, we'll organise a prompt refund with no quibbling – something our guests often appreciate.

12. Can I request private festivities or celebratory add-ons?

Yes. From toasting your anniversary in a remote lava field to sampling birthday dinners in a Sami hut, our tailor-made Norway holiday packages can include champagne, cakes, and personalised surprises.

13. How are hidden gem locations chosen for bespoke Norway travel packages?

We rely on local guides' insider knowledge and guest feedback to uncover secret hot springs, secluded ice caves, and remote fishing villages, ensuring you enjoy authentic, crowd-free Norway.

14. Do the Baltic Travel Company's Norway tourism packages offer sustainable travel options?

Yes. We regularly partner with eco-lodges powered by renewable energy, small-group providers committed to the Leave No Trace principle, and carbon-offset carriers, so you can explore Norway responsibly.

Hi Inga

We had a fabulous time in North Norway. It was one of the most relaxing and interesting holidays we have had and the weather was calm with many sunny periods. The Tromso-Lofoten-Bodø itinerary you put together worked well for us and we fitted in our own sightseeing easily into the free time viz. in Tromso we took the Fjellheisen cable car , walked on the hilltops overlooking Tromso and the next day went on fjords lunch tour with small group and guide (Northern Shots ) to Sommarøy; in Bodø we visited Jecktefartsmuseet , marvellous maritime museum outside Bodo with views out to sea, and in the evening we went on a Northern Lights tour around countryside near Bodø (courtesy of Ivar at Nordland Turselskap).

Our boat trips were a great experience as well as a relaxing way to travel between the three holiday bases (cruising holidays are not really our thing but nice for just one day). We were blessed with lovely clear weather so could see the wondrous Norwegian mountainous coast all the way from the Hurtigruten ship, sailing under island bridges and down fjords.

The Lofoten islands were lovely as we knew they would be, the snowy landscape magical in the changing light, glistening in the sun or disappearing in sleet as we were driven round mountains and fjords and pretty villages by Ellen the guide . It was like a private tour as she had no other takers that morning . We really appreciated her knowledge of the history and geography of Lofoten and personal insight to life above the Arctic Circle.

The super smooth and silent Brim Explorer boat tour of the Trollsfjord from Svolvær was really good as we felt safe and comfortable on it and could see the sea eagles on rocks quite close to the boat. Much better than being on a RIB boat so we were pleased we had changed from that option.

We were not looking forward to getting up early to catch the 6am fast boat to Bodø from Solvraer but in the event our spirits lifted as we saw the sun rising on the coastline and lighting up the islands en route and by the end of the journey we thought that has got to be the best experience possible of that sea crossing .

The last stop of Bodø was the icing on the cake: a lovely non touristy place with fascinating maritime history, friendly people and an easy transfer to the airport. We could have spent another day there to recover from our early morning start!

I hope my comments are helpful .

Hi Nikola,

Sorry for the late reply. We had a fantastic holiday, thanks! It was all brilliant, and very well-organised by you. Even the weather was ok - we had a mixture, from sunshine to blizzards. But there was plenty of good weather when we were on the boats, so we really enjoyed the beautiful scenery as we travelled up and down the coast. It was interesting to compare the Havila and Hurtigruten boats, as we know people who have been on both. The food and comfort were great on both, but we slightly preferred the quieter vibe on the Havila.

The Lofoten Islands are absolutely stunning! We had a lovely sunny day to do our trip down to Reine, so we got to take lots of fabulous photos of the mountains, water and reflections. We also really enjoyed seeing all the sea eagles there.

And we did see the Northern Lights too! There was a fantastic display on our last night in Tromso, when we went on the Aurora Hunt (very professionally run and enjoyable). The lights were going all evening, it was a truly amazing experience!

Thanks so much for organising such a great holiday for us!

Dear Laura,

Just a note to say that we had a most amazing holiday, every bit a truly wonderful adventure in Norway.

Heathrow blackout was not on the itinerary but we thank your company for being on the ball and getting us a new flight booked from Gatwick which was very, very much appreciated.

All the activities were every bit an experience that gave us a wonderful taste of Norway’s history, hospitality and beautiful landscape.

The itinerary was easy to follow and allowed us time to fill in with our own activities to enrich our experience - even experiencing , after not thoroughly checking by ourselves, a missed ferry that we fortunately were able to get another later booking. The crossing however was not quite so favourable!!

The hotels were comfortable with easy access, very hospitable and breakfasts to set us up for the day . Staff and guides were attentive, knowledgeable and very friendly.

Norway is every bit and more nature at its best, I shall not hesitate to encourage friends and family to follow our footsteps.

Thank you once again for all your assistance and help in making this a holiday to experience and remember.

Good afternoon,

Sorry for the delay in reply. Since we got back we've been super busy.

The holiday was fab, thank you.

We did see the northern lights. So beautiful.  We got that in Kiruna. It lasted hours. Made our lad so happy as it was the first time he has ever seen it himself and didn't need a camera to see it.

Stockholm was awesome. We got an SL travel ticket for three days, so basically could do what we liked without worrying or thinking about trips costs. If we would have had any longer, we'd have gone to Uppsala, but Stockholm has so much it wasn't worth doing that this time. Think I museumed out both husband and son, but they were really excellent quality and I particularly wanted them to go to the Vasa museum. I saw that back in the early 90's and remembered it as being most impressive.  It still was. I couldn't persuade them to go in the ABBA museum, so they waited outside while I went in. I enjoyed it immensely,  but karaoke is a lot more fun when you are with your friends. Got a random audience clap, though, so was still fun.

Free skating in one of the town squares took us there two days. Just need to pay for skates if you don't have any. Don't know what months that runs through.

I can't say what any catering was like on the train, as the advice was to not bother due to queueing, so we took our own breakfast and had a takeout before the evening boarding.

The takeout was a cooked pay by weight from the dept store. That is definitely worth recommending. Everybody gets what they want for a decent price and it's excellent quality. We did that a couple of times.

One night we'd booked a tourist gimmick Viking restaurant. I would 100% recommend it, however, as it was clearly a labour of love. he food was great and it integrated people from all round the world,  so might help with world peace, too! Well, that not might not be the Viking way, but it definitely was there. We live in hope.

We did dog sledding in Kiruna. It was very different to my experience in Greenland. The dogs were more like pets. We also did snowmobiling on an evening dinner trip. That was awesome. It started off really cloudy, so by the time we actually finished dinner and opened the hut door, it was really magical experience as it was really full on aurora and we hadn'texpected it at all. Even without that, the trip was magical, snowmobiling across  the tundra and cooking dinner on a silver birch fire and talking and singing.

We saw two ice hockey games whilst away.  One in Sweden and one in Norway. The Sweden one in Hovet Arena had very charismatic fans so a lot of atmosphere. The one in Narvik was comparatively sedate, with home made cakes and coffee fir sale, but also good. Both home teams won.

As ever, the biggest issue was time. We now need a holiday to recover.

Hi Laura,

I had a fantastic holiday in Tromso.

The hotel was in a very good location and was clean and comfortable. The reception staff arranged a takeaway bag of complimentary food at 5 pm for the two nights when I was going on the Northern Lights tours, so that I would have time to eat before departing for the tours.

The dog sledding activity was very enjoyable and the lunch was tasty. The Northern Lights tour on 9th March was also very enjoyable and I was able to see the Aurora in several locations. The guide was very helpful and had a good sense of humour.

The second Northern Lights tour on 10th March was also good, but I preferred the first one.

I did plenty of walking around the city and found it easy to get around, and the museums were very interesting.

I thought that three nights spent there was the right amount of time for activities and getting around. The highlight of my holiday was seeing the Northern Lights.

I would definitely recommend this holiday! I’ve attached a few photos.

Many thanks for all your help.

Gill
