More about Svalbard Holidays
In addition to a few thousand polar bears, the islands are home to almost 3000 human inhabitants, over 2000 of whom live in Longyearbyen, the administrative centre and largest settlement of the islands. This small and colourful community has developed from being a typical village town into a modern community with different kinds of businesses and industries, and with a surprisingly wide range of cultural activities and opportunities, such as concerts, shows, festivals and exhibitions. There are also several first-class bars and restaurants in Longyearbyen, of a much higher standard than you might expect from such a small community, including what must the northernmost Thai restaurant in the world.
Historically, both whaling and trapping have been major activities in the archipelago, but now sustainability is the guiding principle in every way. Nearly two thirds of the surface of Svalbard is protected, with several nature reserves, national parks, bird sanctuaries and even a geotopical protected area.

Hi Iveta.
The trip lived up to its name, and we DID see polar bears (a mother & 2 cubs) plus loads of other wildlife including, whales, walrus, sea eagles & puffins. The trip was amazing, each day the sights got more spectacular, the beauty of the fjords, the wildlife, then finally the glaciers and sea ice in Svalbard just took your breath away (it was cold !!). Also the ship was well organised, excellent food, very friendly and experienced crew. I would highly recommend this trip. I have too many photos to send you. Where can I go next to top this??
Regards
Georgina
