Finland is a large, sparsely populated country that features barren Arctic landscapes in the North, thousands of tiny islands in the South, vast, unspoiled forests, crystal clear lakes in between – there are roughly 187,000 of them – and one of Europe's most fashionable capitals in Helsinki, Finland holidays are both breathtaking and precious.

What to do in Finland

During your holiday in Finland, you may stay in a Glass Igloo or Aurora Bubble, under the Night Sky and you will be able to see the Northern Lights from your own personal igloo with all modern comforts.

Or try the world famous Ice Hotel: Finland has it all. Finland's Northern Lights, surrounded by vast forests of trees, truly capture the wonder of the Far North. The combination of snow around you, the Finland Northern Lights, the atmosphere of Finland Christmas holidays or New Year holidays in Finland guarantee an outstanding experience.

Finland is known as "the country of a thousand lakes" for its impressive number of over 168,000 lakes spread across the country, but also as "the land of the Midnight Sun" for its golden light nights from mid-May to mid-August.

Why Visit Finland?

There is a lot of mystery as well as many attractions in the Finnish Arctic, such as the Northern Lights and every child’s dream to meet Father Christmas. Days are spent enjoying the frosty climate, while evenings are for soothing saunas and crackling fires and looking out for the Aurora Borealis. The concept of the iconic Northern Lights Igloo is a relatively new phenomenon but works beautifully making it the perfect destination for tourists chasing wildlife holidays.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Finland?

Finland is a country for all seasons, and the best time to visit Finland depends on the regions you are looking to travel to. Aurora borealis and snow mostly occur in Northern and Eastern Finland between December and April. The long summer months run between June and late August, with Midnight Suns appearing in June. This will provide a fantastic time to travel to Helsinki and Lakeland for Finland's fly-driving holidays.

The winter season for Finland holidays is just the best time to appreciate the scenery, take a moment to look through our range of Finland holiday packages to choose from.

Finland has wide open landscapes and vast forests, over 180,000 lakes, and 37 national parks. In eastern Finnish forests, ancient Taiga forests are habitat for brown bears, wolverines, lynxes and other native fauna and Lakeland with thousands of beautiful waters and serene lakes.

Are Backpacking Holidays Popular in Finland?

Finland is one of the most underrated holiday destinations in Europe, but that is precisely what makes it an attractive destination for backpacking and hiking experiences, since you will be bathing in its spectacular nature while avoiding the crowds. Finland hiking holidays give you the opportunity to explore this beautiful wilderness, away from the crowd and deep into its ancient forests and crystalline lakes. Finland's vast forest and lakes interrupted with small towns and villages are perfect for summer trips, especially in the North where the sunlight never sets during ten weeks at the end of the summer.

How to Get Around in Finland?

Finland has a variety of transportation options that backpackers can use to get around the country. These include biking, walking, car rentals, buses, and trains.

Biking is a great way to explore the country by yourself or with a group of friends. It's also an environmentally friendly option that doesn't require much infrastructure.

Walking is another great way to explore the countryside without having to worry about getting lost or dealing with traffic congestion. You can take walks in any part of Finland—even in the city—and there are usually plenty of trails available for pedestrians to follow.

Cars offer convenience for tourists and commuters alike; they're easy to use and provide access to almost everywhere in Finland. If you're looking for something more exclusive than public transport or just want some peace and quiet while traveling through Finnish towns and villages, renting a car might be your best bet.

Bus travel is very convenient if you need to get from one major city centre to another quickly, and it is affordable alternative to car renting.

Train travel is also a great way to see the country on a slow but scenic trip, and you can get up in the beautiful countryside. Trains also offer great views of Finnish towns and villages as they go by, making for an unforgettable backpacking experience.

What Is the Climate Like in Finland?

The climate conditions of Finland are temperate, which means that there is a moderate to cool weather with four seasons. The average temperature ranges from about -5 degrees Celsius in winter to about 25 degrees Celsius in summer. There's usually some rain or snowfall throughout the year but on average it's quite dry most of the time.

Dear Daina:

We just got home last night from our wonderful trip to Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and Finland!  We have been lucky enough to have traveled all around the world but this was the only trip where things worked perfectly. We were accustomed to queuing up for taxis at airports and feeling uneasy about whether the meter was fair, to accidentally taking the wrong bus, or to being disappointed because the hotel that looked so great on the internet did not look great in person.  We have stayed in towns that literally closed down on Sundays and there had been no mention of that on-line.  We ate dinner from a vending machine because no restaurants were open.  Those glitches didn't ruin our trips - we just figured they were part of traveling.  Now we know better!  On the trip Baltic Travel arranged for us we were picked up at and delivered to every airport or bus by our own drivers.  What a luxury!  And in each city we enjoyed local tour guides arranged by Baltic Travel.  We learned so much from them.  The hotels were clean and beautiful and all were located within walking distance of art museums - something important to us, and they all served fabulous free breakfasts.  We were traveling on my 70th birthday and the reception clerks all wished me a happy birthday and some hotels even had a treat waiting for me in our room!  Everything was first class.  We will definitely recommend you to our friends.  We can't thank you enough for all the wonderful memories!

Very best wishes!

Hi Inga,

We had an absolutely brilliant week at the Wilderness Hotel in Nellim.  We organised a morning of cross-country ski-ing which I loved, a night snowshoeing and hot chocolate by a big big roaring campfire under the stars (No Borealis).   The Husky Safari was best of all and my husband and I took turns at driving.   I was so pleased to bring the dogs home and they were so friendly.   We also organised a Reindeer Farm Visit, stopping off at the lovely little church.   In the evening we walked out over the lake and were lucky to see a small taste of what the lights could be as the sky was clear.

Our first couple of nights were spent in the new 12 room cabin but I’m afraid there was no sauna in the building!!   Whether it has not been built yet, I don’t know as there was obviously work unfinished at the end of the corridor.   There is a sauna to book in the main building but when I spoke to Minka the manageress, she said a cabin had just become available with its own private sauna if we cared to move.   We were delighted, as you know this was what we had originally wanted.  Enjoyed my saunas each day thereafter.

Our last night was spent in the Aurora Bubble lying in bed with our complementary glass of sparkling wine and chocolate, looking out at the snow, the trees and the dark night sky full of stars, but I’m afraid no lights!   It didn’t really matter.   It was a lovely experience in any case.

All in all a wonderful 70th birthday which we will remember for many years.   Thank you for organising it for us.

Kind regards,

Linda and Bill

Dear Saija,

Many thanks for organising our holiday to Finland, which we enjoyed. Everything that you organised ran well, but  you should know that Hotel Savonia no longer appears to be part of the Best Western chain. We were able to find all the hotels on google maps before going to Finland.

Many thanks,

Peter & Alison K
