Northern Lights and Aurora Holiday Packages

In the winter months, Iceland's northern location makes it an ideal place to see the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The natural phenomenon lights up the dark night sky with a glittering display of swirling colours – an incredible sight that has to be seen to be believed.

Head out into the wilderness with a local guide, on a husky sled, snowmobile or jeep, and experience the lights in tranquillity miles from light pollution, with world-class conditions in places like the black sand beaches near Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula coastline, and Thingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Winter Holidays in Iceland

Winter tours in Iceland are a bucket list experience, offering ice cave hiking, fast-paced snowmobiling, and whale watching trips. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to spot Orcas, humpback whales, and even blue whales in the waters around the lagoons, icebergs, and coastal waters.

From Northern Lights chases to rustic wilderness retreats, indulgent treatments at lakeside geothermal spas, and venturing into the Golden Circle to see the magnificent geysers or spending a short break amid the festive ambience of cosmopolitan Reykjavik, there is an Icelandic winter escape for everyone.

Adventure & Activity Trip Packages

Iceland is packed with natural wonders, from rugged mountains to deep, icy waters, towering glaciers, and thundering waterfalls. If you'd love an active holiday in this dramatically spectacular landscape, getting outdoors is a must.

In the summer, we can recommend packages that take in the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, the best spots for kayaking and river rafting, stables that offer guided horseback rides over the lava fields, and excellent hikes up Mount Esja. During the winter, the range of excursions is equally vast, with ice caving, glacier lagoon kayaking, snowmobiling over the ice caps, and volcano tours where you can descend right inside a dormant volcano.

Summer Holidays in Iceland

While Iceland package holidays are often extremely popular during the snowy Arctic winter, the summer Midnight Sun season is an equally fabulous time to travel, with warmer weather and easier access to Viking settlements, rural villages, and trails, especially in more remote regions that are often inaccessible during the winter.

Icelandic summer is a time for celebration, with countless festivals across the lively nightlife and fine dining scene in Reykjavik and more peaceful activities like snorkelling in Thingvellir National Park. You might also choose to while away a sunny afternoon in the untouched West fjords or dip your toes in the sea by the black sand beaches or the warm waters of the iconic Blue Lagoon.

Iceland Package Holidays FAQs

1. How customisable are the Baltic Travel Company’s tailor-made Iceland vacation packages?

Our Iceland itineraries can often be adjusted based on your bucket list experiences and the interests of your party. If, for example, you’d like a few extra days chasing the Northern Lights, a private dinner to mark an occasion, or a detour to a hidden waterfall, we can customise your itinerary for you.

2. Can I choose unique, off-the-beaten-path experiences in Iceland?

Absolutely. Guests often compliment our local guides, who can recommend remote geysers, lesser-known ice caves, and tucked-away fishing villages, allowing you to enjoy authentic, crowd-free moments that typical tours can’t offer.

3. What level of support can I expect during my Iceland trip?

Every Iceland holiday package includes 24/7 UK-based emergency support and on-demand assistance from our in-destination partners. Whether you need a last-minute transfer tweak, weather-driven itinerary changes or an emergency car swap, our team has you covered.

4. Are meals and Icelandic accommodations truly local and high-quality?

Reviews highlight our hand-picked boutique hotels, eco-lodges, and gorgeous retreats, as well as our curated dining experiences and gourmet tours, ranging from fine cuisines in Reykjavík to rustic, fireside meals in remote countryside camps.

5. How flexible is the itinerary if the weather in Iceland changes?

Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable. Our experts monitor conditions in real-time and will adjust your schedule as needed. That could mean hunting the Aurora one night earlier than originally planned or swapping a glacier hike for a whale-watching cruise when winds pick up.

6. How quickly will I receive my custom Iceland itinerary and quote?

You’ll get a detailed, tailor-made itinerary and firm quote within 24 hours of your initial enquiry. Our returning guests love the “lightning-fast turnaround” they’ve come to expect, and the clarity of the information we provide.

7. Are international flights included in the Baltic Travel Company’s tailor-made Iceland vacation packages?

Yes, we include ATOL-protected international flights in many of our packages, and you can often select your preferred UK airport to depart from and return to. Reviewers often note how “seamless” and “stress-free” the flight booking process was when added to their trip to Iceland.

8. What group sizes does the Baltic Travel Company accommodate on tailor-made tours?

Iceland holiday packages can be organised for any number of guests, with information shared where single-occupant supplements apply. Our tailor-made group tours typically host 4 to 12 travellers, keeping groups small and personal. Clients appreciate the intimate atmosphere, saying it allows for more flexibility and genuine connections.

9. Can the Baltic Travel Company arrange special celebrations or surprises during my Iceland trip?

Absolutely. Whether it’s a birthday dinner under the Northern Lights or an anniversary toast in a geothermal pool, our team can plan custom surprises. Guests have raved about surprise cake-and-champagne moments on remote lava fields.

10. How experienced are the guides on the Baltic Travel Company’s Iceland travel packages?

All guides on our Iceland travel packages are Icelandic experts with years of experience. Guests always value their insider knowledge, from pointing out hidden lagoons and Viking ruins to sharing the cultural customs and celebrations that bring your trip to life.

11. Are flights included in the Baltic Travel Company’s Iceland packages?

Yes, many of our Iceland packages are flight-inclusive and ATOL-protected when departing from the UK, so your air travel is fully covered. Other packages are ABTOT protected, with clear information provided about trips that are based on independent travel or involve a fly/drive experience.

12. Is financial protection included with the Baltic Travel Company’s Iceland holidays?

Yes. All our Iceland holiday packages are covered by either the ATOL or ABTOT financial protection schemes, so your flights and holiday arrangements are protected. You’ll receive an ATOL or ABTOT Certificate explaining exactly what’s covered and how to claim if something goes wrong.

13. Can I cancel my Iceland holiday package without penalty?

Standard cancellation terms apply to our Iceland holidays; however many packages offer a free cancellation window, depending on how long ago you made your booking and the time left until your departure date. Please check your specific itinerary for the exact deadline and conditions or get in touch with our friendly advisers.

14. What makes Iceland such a popular travel destination?

Iceland’s dramatic scenery, featuring towering waterfalls, geothermal hot springs, rugged volcanoes, and the dancing Aurora Borealis, offers an adventure unlike anywhere else. Hi Julija,

Apparently I have lost the mail you sent, but had read it. I arrived home the early morning of the 3rd.

Was a wonderful trip, I had a great time in Iceland !

Heavy rain the first day, everyone soaked, but ended with the Blue Lagoon which was lovely.

Day 2 and 3, weather clear. Loved the waterfalls, black sand beach and mountains.

New Year's Eve - Bonfire and fireworks.  Dinner was moved to an earlier time which caused the large group to break up before midnight.  A small group got together to see in the New Year.  Also a slight subtle view of the Northern Lights.

Dinners were good and lunch stops also, well paced and planned.

My cabin at the Arhus was dismal though.  I saw other cabins later that were upgraded unlike the one I had.  If had seen them earlier I may have asked to be moved. The Hotel Cabin made up for it, I was given rooms both nights that were "superior".  So I was the envy of the group.

Bus safe and very comfortable, good driver and excellent guide, Baldur.  He was truly a gem and I learned so much.

I thank you so very much for your help and planning.  All my arrangements were in perfect order and all went smoothly.

Warm regards and best wishes for the New Year

Cleo

Hi Julija -only got back home yesterday evening so still catching up.

But overall delighted with trip. Weather was in the main mild though when out in wind very cold. Coupled with rain on 30/12 meant got well soaked but as we ended in Blue Lagoon no big deal. No real snow

Day 2 (31/12) & 3 up in Highlands/ golden circle - loved the waterfalls and the mountains and now drunk tomato beer!!!! Weather excellent - clear & sunny !!

Logistics excellent; travel brilliant; bus & driver very safe & comfortable - guide (Baldur?) superb - brilliant knowledge & English, a delight to be with.

Two formal meals good; breakfasts fine; lunch stops good.

Only three gripes -

1) hugely expensive country - not your fault !

2) NYE arrangements a bit flat - bonfire & fireworks at 5pm , over by 6pm. Dinner brought forward to 7.30pm (convenience of hotel staff?) over by 10pm. Our firework display - over by 10.30p.m. Nothing to do till midnight so group fragmented - I was OK as helped organise a party of 6/8 of us and we saw in together (with a minimal appearance from N.Lights) but others just felt no option other than bed.

3) Only real biggie - standard of hotels very basic - not really in keeping with price of trip. Suggest you either move to upgraded pair or make it much clearer just how basic the standard pair are. Could live with Arhus chalet but Cabin tiny room and very hot.Had we known we would definitely have upgraded in R'vik as a minimum.

Overall very happy as only 4 nights spread across three hotel rooms - had it ben any longer though and hotel rooms would have been a major issue.

Oh one last thing - standard of travel consultant in UK - excellent - thank you very much for all your help & guidance. Will happily forgive your one mistake - my vouchers in name of Cleopatra! Caused a little stir at Cabin first time until we realised what had happened; thereafter became a tour joke.

Hope that helps.

Kindest regards & best wishes for a successful 2019

Andy

Hi Daina

I wanted to let you know that we have a great time in Iceland, it was very cold -5 and snowy.  The 2 day trips that we went on were really good and very interesting.  Unfortunately the Northern Lights tour was cancelled every night due to the bad weather which was a shame as we really were hoping to see them.

I wanted to ask the question regarding this tour, would we be able to claim the cost of the tour back or not?

Regards
Claire

Hello Daina,

Yes, I am well after having a lovely holiday to Reykjavik and of course a day trip to Kulusuk.

In reply to your question, Kulsuk was wonderful!  The first view from the aeroplane window was breath taking!  I had never seen a country covered by snowy mountains ( even though I have been skiing).  The sun was shining brightly, it seemed very near and the sky was clear.  It was 2C but I did not feel it.  The 6km return walk to the village was very pleasant and I was nearly sweating under my jacket.  The village people were very friendly and we were entertained by a drum dance performed by a young woman.  I am very glad that I chose to go to Greenland.

Reykjavik too was a lovely city and by the end of my six day trip, I seemed to know every nook and corner as I walked almost everywhere.  I did not go any food tours as there seemed to be too much food about and I am a small eater.  The weather could have been better, but I managed  and when the sun did come out it was warm!  My experiences -

The Golden Circle tour - I thoroughly enjoyed the two staged Gulfoss waterfall ( was better than Niagara) and the Geysir ( two types of hot springs ).

The Blue Lagoon - after an hour, felt lovely and hot in cold and wet Iceland.

Burid cheese shop - http://blog.burid.is/english was worth a visit, where the manager is very passionate about Icelandic cheeses. Address - Grandagardi 35, Reykjavik 101, Iceland

The Phallological museum which was unusual

The half day Lava tunnel tour was very informative.

Icelandic food that I tried and  liked - fish - cod and blue ling,  the meat soup made from lamb

Drinks-  beer and liqueur made from rhubarb - Rabarbara

Ice cream - Danish liquorice

Also had a large Skyr with fresh fruit  for one lunch

The Hotel -  it was very central, the staff were very helpful in all ways.  The room was spacious and faced the main square which I liked.

Negative points of the room - the shower cubicle was tiny.  At first I thought the slightly bad smell in the cubicle was from the sulphured water, later I realised it was from the drain.  I complained and it was probably rectified as it did not smell that bad anymore.

Thank you.

Hi Inga

Just wanted to say a big thank you for your help in booking the holiday to Iceland. We had an amazing time! The hotel was brilliant- perfect location and excellent breakfast. The tour with Gateway to Iceland was the highlight of the trip. Really good company and it was great to be part of a small group.

All the arrangements were great- you made it very easy and we hope to return again in the future to see more!

unfortunatley, we didn't get to see the northern lights as the weather was bad. Does that get refunded automatically?

thanks again
