Rila Monastery

Overview:

Signature Bulgaria is a private, tailor-made journey through a country of striking contrasts and quiet luxury. Elegant cities such as Sofia and Plovdiv reveal layers of Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman history, while the cobbled streets of Veliko Tarnovo and the Black Sea coast offer a slower, more refined pace of life.

Beyond the cities, Bulgaria’s landscapes are both varied and beautiful. The famous Rose Valley near Kazanlak is at its most fragrant in early summer, while the Thracian Lowlands are home to boutique wineries producing distinctive local varieties. Wine tastings, farm-to-table dining, and traditional culinary experiences can all be arranged along the way.

For relaxation, the country is rich in natural thermal springs, with stylish spa retreats in places such as Velingrad, Hisarya, and Sandanski. Those looking for something more active can hike in the Rila, Pirin, or Rhodope Mountains, explore the Seven Rila Lakes, or visit scenic villages and monasteries tucked into the hills. In winter, resorts like Bansko and Borovets offer excellent skiing with a more intimate, boutique atmosphere.

Whether you choose a private driver-guided journey, a luxury fly-drive, or a small escorted tour, every detail is shaped around your interests. The result is a relaxed, elegant exploration of Bulgaria’s culture, landscapes, and flavours, designed entirely to your pace and style.

The UK is well connected to Bulgaria, with direct flights to several airports across the country. Sofia Airport is the main gateway and ideal for cultural tours, spa regions, and mountain areas. On the Black Sea coast, Varna serves the northern resorts while Burgas is the best option for the southern coastline.

Plovdiv Airport operates a smaller number of seasonal flights and can be convenient for wine regions and nearby ski areas. Depending on your itinerary, flights can be arranged into one city and out of another for a smooth journey.

Tour Itinerary:

Relax in carefully selected high-end and boutique hotels, unwind in luxury spa and thermal bath retreats, or embrace adventure with hiking, skiing, or scenic fly-drives through Bulgaria’s dramatic mountains, valleys, and coastline. Every detail is curated to your style, ensuring a seamless, intimate, and unforgettable holiday where culture, cuisine, nature, and comfort come together in perfect harmony.

Overall rating: (5/5)

The attention to detail that Nikola included in our bespoke itinerary for a 10 day trip to Bulgaria was extraordinary. Whilst the experiences in the main tourist cities of Sofia and Plovdiv were sensational, we also visited lesser-known towns and villages, seeing sights and visiting restaurants that would never have been on our radar without her meticulous planning. And our local guide, Albena, was exceptional! I will definitely ask Nikola to plan another fun, fab, interesting and thought-provoking trip to the Balkans again and can’t wait!

What are the top tips to visiting Bulgaria?

A few helpful travel tips for Bulgaria:

  • Currency: Bulgaria now uses the Euro (€). Card payments are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, but it is still useful to carry some cash for smaller cafés, markets, and rural areas.
  • Language: The official language is Bulgarian, which uses the Cyrillic alphabet. In most hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas, English is commonly spoken.
  • Getting around: Taxis are generally affordable and convenient in cities such as Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna. It’s best to use official taxi companies or ask your hotel to arrange one.
  • Cuisine: Bulgarian cuisine is hearty and full of flavour. Be sure to try traditional dishes such as Shopska salad, grilled meats, and fresh breads. Bulgaria is also known for its excellent and good-value local wines.
  • Yes and No gestures: In Bulgaria, traditional head gestures can sometimes appear reversed to visitors — nodding may mean “no” and shaking the head may mean “yes.” In tourist areas people often use international gestures, but it’s an interesting cultural quirk to be aware of.
  • Dress when visiting churches: When visiting monasteries and churches, modest clothing is recommended (covered shoulders and knees where possible).
  • Weather: Summers can be warm, especially in inland cities, so sunscreen, comfortable walking shoes, and a reusable water bottle are recommended when sightseeing.
