Norway Northern Lights Holiday Packages: Set Tours & Arctic Vacation Trips

  Northern Lights by Bjorn Jorgensen/VisitNorway

Norway Northern Lights travel packages transport you to the frozen north, an astonishing part of the world with thousands of tiny islands, deep, icy fjords and soaring mountain ranges. All this makes Norway a fascinating destination where you can see the Aurora and try endless winter sports, from husky sledding to ice fishing.

Situated right under the Aurora zone, Norway offers a mix of culture and sophistication in its cities, contrasting with rustic, exclusive accommodation options like ice hotels and rural lodges featuring private cabins with panoramic windows for an unrivalled view of the lights.

Among the most in-demand packages, Tromsø Northern Lights tours are often considered the best in the world. The extended months of polar night and the fact that the city is one of the furthest north of the Arctic Circle make it a perfect starting point for North Pole expeditions and Aurora sightings.

What to Expect from a Norway Northern Lights Holiday

Each of our Norway Northern Lights vacation packages is designed to maximise your chances of seeing the lights while offering extraordinary excursions and experiences. Itineraries are curated to incorporate our favourite activities, and all include an opportunity to see the lights, whether from a reindeer sleigh, a husky sled, or on a snowshoe tour.

Although the lights aren't guaranteed, the further north you head, the better the visibility becomes, with Northern Norway Aurora breaks structured around amazing viewing spots far from light pollution. Guests also love the festive atmosphere of the snowy scenery and the chance to learn more about the indigenous Sámi culture.

If you're travelling between November and January, a visit to Tromsø is highly recommended, where you could be lucky enough to see orcas and humpbacks in the coastal waters.

When and Where to See the Northern Lights in Norway

The Baltic Travel Company’s advisers are on hand to offer personalised recommendations for the Norway Northern Lights holiday packages that tick all your boxes, but as a quick reference guide:

  • Norway's Aurora season typically runs from September to April, though prime travel periods between November and January are often in the highest demand.

  • Getting as far away from artificial light as possible is essential, which is why we schedule guided Northern Lights chases with seasoned, English-speaking guides who will escort you to the best possible spots where you'll have an uninterrupted view.

  • Weather plays a big part in whether the lights are bright and vibrant, and in many cases, your accommodation provider can provide guidance on the forecast or reschedule an Aurora hunt if cloud cover means one particular evening isn't likely to be a success.

  • The weather in Norway in winter is very cold, and it's wise to be prepared – we can offer advice, organise thermal clothing hire, or provide complimentary snow suits. You’ll find details of all inclusions within each itinerary.

If you'd like more information about any of the packages and short breaks featured here, or to speak with a member of the team to narrow down your options, you are welcome to get in touch.

Norway Northern Lights FAQs

1. Are your Norway Northern Lights packages guided?
All our Norway Northern Lights travel packages with designated excursions to see the lights are led by expert local guides. Whether you're joining an Aurora chase in Tromsø or venturing into the Arctic wilderness on a husky sled, your guide will ensure you have a safe, informative and unforgettable experience.

2. Can I see the Aurora from my hotel or resort?
Possibly! Many of our Norway Northern Lights holiday packages include accommodation in remote, scenic locations where you can view the Aurora Borealis directly from your lodge, cabin or even bed. Guests frequently highlight the thrill of watching the lights dance across the sky through glass-roofed rooms or from outdoor hot tubs.

3. What kind of activities are included in your Northern Lights travel packages?
It’s always wise to review the inclusions, excursions and guided tours within any package you’re interested in, as these vary widely!

Depending on the itinerary, your Norway Aurora holiday might include dog-sledding, snowmobile safaris, fjord cruises, Sami cultural visits and more. Some packages also offer photography workshops or evening Aurora safaris when the chance of seeing the lights is greatest.

4. How cold does it get during the Aurora season in Norway?
The Norwegian Aurora season runs from late September to early April, when temperatures in Northern Norway typically range from -5°C to -25°C.

It is very cold, but it is also perfectly manageable with the proper winter clothing, which we can help arrange for you in advance upon request.

5. Is a Norwegian Northern Lights holiday suitable for families or older travellers?
Absolutely! We offer several Northern Lights tour packages in Norway that are designed for families, couples and older travellers. They can include low-impact excursions, and we can adapt the itinerary to suit the activities and exertion level you’re comfortable with.

Warm, accessible accommodation, support from guides and hospitality providers, and small group sizes all make for a relaxed Arctic experience, whether you love high-octane winter sports or prefer a more laid-back pace.

6. Do I need to bring special winter gear?
Thermal outerwear is essential for any Northern Lights trip! Depending on your location, winter temperatures in Norway can drop well below zero, so we recommend bringing insulated boots, layers, hats, and gloves. Many of our Northern Lights packages include optional thermal gear rental or complimentary snowsuit hire, and, as always, those details will be confirmed at the same time as your booking.

7. Are flights included in the Norway Northern Lights tour packages?
The choice is yours! Most of our Northern Lights holiday packages in Norway are flight-inclusive and ATOL-protected, but you can also consider independent travel or a fly-drive trip if these suit you better.

Guests can also usually select their preferred UK departure airport. For land-only bookings, we provide ABTOT protection, and flight and itinerary details are confirmed upon enquiry, regardless of the travel options you’ve gone for.

8. What level of support can I expect during my trip?
All Norway holiday packages from the Baltic Travel Company include access to our 24/7 UK-based emergency support helpline and in-destination assistance.

Our local partners in Norway are well-versed in all the aspects of your getaway, with the flexibility to accommodate adverse weather and the logistics of cross-country tours. If your plans need to change due to heavy snow or cloud cover, alternative activities or updated Aurora timings can be organised.

9. How reliable is seeing the Northern Lights on these tours?
The Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon and, therefore, can’t be guaranteed! However, our Northern Lights travel packages are designed for optimal viewing, away from city lights, and during the peak Aurora season. For some holidays, visitors can rely on guides or accommodation partners to monitor live Aurora forecasts.

Most guests do see the lights during their stay, often on multiple nights, and there are also inclusive packages where, if the lights don’t appear or the forecast is poor during a scheduled tour, you’ll be invited to reschedule for another evening during your stay.

10. Can I extend my stay in Oslo, Tromsø, or add another destination?
Of course! While our Northern Lights holidays typically follow a set itinerary, we can arrange pre- or post-tour extensions to explore Oslo, Bergen, or other parts of Norway. Whether you're looking to relax before an Arctic adventure or explore Norway’s cultural cities as part of a winter travel experience, we’ll be more than happy to customise your trip.

11. Does the Baltic Travel Company offer tailor-made holidays to see the Northern Lights in Norway?
We do indeed, and offer both fixed Northern Lights tour packages with ready-made itineraries and inclusions, as well as tailor-made holidays to Norway built specifically around your preferences.

If you’d like, for example, to stay in a glass igloo, add a city break in Oslo, include extra Aurora excursions or combine your trip with a fjord cruise or train journey, we’ll either recommend the best packages or create an itinerary that includes everything on your bucket list.

12. What are the best months to see the Northern Lights in Norway?
The Northern Lights season in Norway runs from late September to early April, during the polar winter when the Aurora is brightest and most visible. The most popular months for Aurora sightings are October to March, when the nights are longest and the skies are darkest, especially above the Arctic Circle in places like Tromsø, Malangen, and Kirkenes.
