Northern Lights and Winter Tours in Greenland

Greenland is astonishingly beautiful in the winter, when the deep snowfall and ice stretch as far as the eye can see – and the Northern Lights sparkle and swirl in the night sky overhead. It is also one of the best places to see the Aurora, with an average of 300 clear nights a year.

Watching the Northern Lights from your own private cabin on a small-ship Arctic cruise or heading out into the iceberg-filled fjords for a private viewing experience is a magical moment, while guests staying in locations like Kangerlussuaq can capture the lights against a background of the charmingly coloured Greenlandic houses and the ice sheet beyond.

Greenland Cruises and Coastal Adventures

Whale watching safaris are one of the most in-demand excursions within a Greenland tour package, and for good reason! Scenic fjord expeditions are a rare chance to get up close with humpback, minke and fin whales during the warmer summer, while in the winter, you can watch for beluga, narwhales and even blue whales in the deeper waters.

The staggering ice formations are vastly impressive, and at each stop, you can explore the local Inuit culture, visit historic Viking settlements, and take the time to hike and explore off the beaten track, with Disko Bay a highlight with its volcanic landscape, active glaciers, and rich cultural heritage.

Greenland Adventure and Nature Holidays

Travellers who adore nature and want to recharge and disconnect from the pace of everyday life are spoiled for choice in Greenland, with everything from walking tours and kayaking experiences throughout the midnight sun season in the summer, to Arctic wildlife trips during the cold winter period.

Set against dramatic coastlines, rugged glaciers, and captivating sunsets, visitors can explore by sled to see eagles, Arctic wolves, and lemmings, head to the north and east to catch a glimpse of the polar bears, or travel to Greenland National Park. The largest national park in the world boasts endless trails and routes and is home to giant walruses and countless Arctic bird species.

Luxury Greenland Trip Packages

For guests who prize relaxation, the hot springs in Greenland are ideal, with springs dotted around the islands, including the Uunartoq hot springs in the east, and those on Disko Island close to Ilulissat, with a balmy temperature that thaws chilly feet and soothes stresses away.

We can also suggest Greenland tour packages with private helicopter tours, gourmet fine dining, exclusive cruises, fjord excursions, and Icefjord tours, which take you over the spectacular Ilulissat Icefjord. This UNESCO World Heritage site needs to be seen to be believed.

Greenland Baltic Traveller Tips

Holiday packages to Greenland are an exciting opportunity to immerse yourself in this wild Arctic island – but if, like many first-time visitors, you're unsure what to pack or what to expect, we've collated some of the best tips and insights from our valued guests and repeat travellers.

  • Brenda advises that travellers should be sure to bring back-up storage for the photos they'll likely take! She said, 'I had a fantastic time and am still downloading some of the pics. I took approx. 750 and used all the storage on my phone. The weather was also fantastic as I had prepared for all weathers, but we were super fortunate, and each day was bright.'

  • Beth noted that the flexibility we offer, with local guides keeping a careful eye on the weather, was appreciated, telling us, 'Antonio is our guide, and he is perfect. Adorable even! The RIB ride was fantastic yesterday. Seems every day is planned as it comes up due to logistical concerns, so we just go along for the ride! So far, the weather has been good, although rain is always in the forecast...'

  • Sunithi commented on the warmth of Arctic clothing, which made icy temperatures feel comfy and warm. She said that 'Kulsuk was wonderful! The first view from the aeroplane window was breathtaking! The sun was shining brightly, it seemed very near, and the sky was clear. It was 2C but I did not feel it. The 6km return walk to the village was very pleasant.'

We're always happy to create a personalised itinerary if you're looking for something beyond a standard tour.

2. What kind of accommodation is included in Greenland travel packages?

Our hand-picked hotels and lodges in Greenland are known for their warmth, comfort, and friendly service. Some travel packages include locally owned accommodation for a more authentic feel, and our team ensures the logistics run smoothly from check-in to check-out.

3. Will I have support if something changes during my trip?

Absolutely. Our team provides 24/7 UK-based emergency assistance and works closely with trusted in-destination partners. Travellers have remarked on how well schedule adjustments were handled, without any stress or confusion. Whether a delayed flight or a weather-dependent activity, our support team and guides ensure your trip stays on track with minimal upheaval.

4. What kind of activities are included in a Greenland tour package?

Depending on the season and region, the following activities can be included; iceberg cruises, glacier hikes, dog sledding, wildlife photography, kayaking, cultural site visits, and Aurora chases. These excursions are often the most memorable part of the trip, from up-close whale sightings to boat rides through iceberg-filled fjords and walking on the Greenland ice sheet.

5. Can I see the Northern Lights on a Greenland trip?

Yes, Greenland is one of the best places in the world to witness the Aurora Borealis, especially from September to April. Reviewers often mention seeing the magical and unforgettable light show from their accommodation or during guided evening tours.

6. What's included in a typical Greenland holiday package?

Most packages include flights, accommodation, local transfers, guided excursions, and some meals. We also take care of logistics like domestic flights within Greenland, airport pickups, and any gear needed for excursions. Travellers appreciate the convenience of pre-arranged services, allowing them to focus on the experience rather than the admin.

7. Is Greenland suitable for solo travellers or small groups?

We arrange Greenland holiday packages for solo travellers, couples, families, and small groups. Our client testimonials highlight how solo guests felt welcomed by both guides and fellow travellers. You can also opt for private departures or join guided tours with a set itinerary and small group size.

8. Can I expect cultural interaction or just nature?

Both! Our Greenland holidays include opportunities to learn about Inuit heritage, meet local people, and visit museums or historical sites. Guests tell us how their guides bring Greenland's culture to life with stories, insights, and personal connections. Whether it's watching a traditional drum dance in a remote village or learning about Viking history in South Greenland, the experience is always enriching.

9. Are your Greenland packages flight-inclusive?

Many of our Greenland packages include international flights and are ATOL-protected. For others, we offer ABTOT financial protection on independent travel packages. You can often choose your preferred UK departure airport, and all flight details are confirmed at the time of booking. Guests typically describe the flight process as smooth and well organised.

10. How flexible is the itinerary if the weather changes?

Greenland's Arctic weather can shift quickly, and flexibility is key. Our local guides monitor forecasts and adapt plans accordingly. As one review highlighted, every day was planned in turn depending on the weather and logistics. This versatile approach ensures you make the most of each day, whether that means rescheduling a boat trip or swapping a glacier hike for another scenic adventure.

11. How experienced are the guides?

Baltic Travel Company guests describe their guides as knowledgeable, passionate, and a major highlight of their trip. Guides are usually locals or Arctic travel experts, offering insights into Greenlandic traditions, geography, and wildlife. Their ability to adapt plans, share stories, and spot wildlife is commonly praised in our reviews.

12. What's the best time to visit Greenland?

The best time depends on your interests:

  • Summer (June to August): Enjoy the spectacle of the Midnight Sun, whale watching, hiking, and exploring Greenland's vibrant tundra during the warmer months.
  • Winter (October to March): See the Northern Lights up close and experience dog sledding, snowmobiling, and the tranquillity of the Polar winter
  • Spring and Autumn: Make the most of quieter travel periods with stunningly colourful landscapes and great wildlife viewing conditions

Hi Daina!

We had a lovely time thank you.

The welcome cards and gifts with birthday messages were lovely! Great touch - thank you so much for organising that.

The flights were great, staff at Old Camp great - as was the accommodation - very comfortable with great breakfasts and showers.

Excursions - everything ran to time and guides were very kind and knowledgeable. Fantastic to be up close with a glacier and walk on an ice cap!!!

We loved Kangerlussuaq - the Danes and Inuits were really lovely.

The only thing I could suggest to your company is to warn people staying in Old Camp of the Giant Mosquitoes, which are everywhere. The camp is close to a swampy area of water and glacial silt and the mosquitoes love it!

Many thanks for all of our help with this package - an amazing holiday!!

Tracey

Hello Daina,

Yes, I am well after having a lovely holiday to Reykjavik and of course a day trip to Kulusuk.

In reply to your question, Kulsuk was wonderful!  The first view from the aeroplane window was breath taking!  I had never seen a country covered by snowy mountains ( even though I have been skiing).  The sun was shining brightly, it seemed very near and the sky was clear.  It was 2C but I did not feel it.  The 6km return walk to the village was very pleasant and I was nearly sweating under my jacket.  The village people were very friendly and we were entertained by a drum dance performed by a young woman.  I am very glad that I chose to go to Greenland.

Reykjavik too was a lovely city and by the end of my six day trip, I seemed to know every nook and corner as I walked almost everywhere.  I did not go any food tours as there seemed to be too much food about and I am a small eater.  The weather could have been better, but I managed  and when the sun did come out it was warm!  My experiences -

The Golden Circle tour - I thoroughly enjoyed the two staged Gulfoss waterfall ( was better than Niagara) and the Geysir ( two types of hot springs ).

The Blue Lagoon - after an hour, felt lovely and hot in cold and wet Iceland.

Burid cheese shop - http://blog.burid.is/english was worth a visit, where the manager is very passionate about Icelandic cheeses. Address - Grandagardi 35, Reykjavik 101, Iceland

The Phallological museum which was unusual

The half day Lava tunnel tour was very informative.

Icelandic food that I tried and  liked - fish - cod and blue ling,  the meat soup made from lamb

Drinks-  beer and liqueur made from rhubarb - Rabarbara

Ice cream - Danish liquorice

Also had a large Skyr with fresh fruit  for one lunch

The Hotel -  it was very central, the staff were very helpful in all ways.  The room was spacious and faced the main square which I liked.

Negative points of the room - the shower cubicle was tiny.  At first I thought the slightly bad smell in the cubicle was from the sulphured water, later I realised it was from the drain.  I complained and it was probably rectified as it did not smell that bad anymore.

Thank you.

Sunithi

Hi Erna

Thank you for your contact my bank details are as follows:

The trip was great I really enjoyed it, the host was so friendly and full of energy and really helpful.

The hotel staff were great I felt really comfortable.   Although I did have an initial panic because no one else seemed to be English in the end there was one other lady but that didn’t matter because the other guests were great really good bunch of people ??

We saw the Northern Lights twice even on the night the trip was cancelled from the hotel I had a lovely view from my room.

The iceberg tour was just stunning and worth the trip just for that.

I have attached some photos for you.

We have had a lovely time on Greenland - this is a beautiful country and we are already thinking of coming back - via Iceland next time! :)

Our highlight was the Russell Glacier. All of the guides and staff were great, but  we wanted to extend particular thanks to one - Kjelt - who took us for the tundra safari, ice cap and glacier tours. He was friendly, knowledgable, funny and always smiling! And he was the one who let us know about the glacier tour and his recommendation was why we booked! Please pass on our thank you to him!

If there is any formal feedback that you wish us to fill in, we are happy to do so!

Anyhow, speak soon - we need to start packing!

Kind regards

Mei

Thank you very much for your message. This was a very nice journey, beautiful places to visit. Departure/arrival times were more or less well respected, nothing seriously annoying. Hotel was fine. It's breakfast area was too small for the number of guests, was difficult to find a table in the morning. The WOW airlines was a bit low quality, especially their ground service was not on top of their job: check-in extremely slow, personel not able to reply questions or solve problems, I will not travel again with that company. Otherwise everything fine, nothing to complain.

Iceland was amazing. The Greenland visit was fantastic, most beautiful place I've ever seen. So I'm very glad with this short journey, planning to take a longer one at some point.

Thanks for organizing, it was very comfortable having all the vouchers and bookings in advance and I've had nothing to worry about. Thank you.

Best regards,

Noemi
