Overview:

On this scenic fly-drive you will encounter many of the Baltic highlights we meet on the Hairy Bikers Northern Exposure programme, now showing on BBC. This Baltic self drive holiday allows you to experience the capitals, Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn of the three Baltic states. It takes you through national parks such as Gauja National Park in Latvia and Lahemaa National Park in Estonia, visits to historical and natural landmarks such as the Hill of Crosses and the Curonian Spit in Lithuania and winds along the Baltic Sea coast through Parnu, Jurmala and Klaipeda.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Riga

Arrive in Riga airport and pick up your rental car. Check-in at the hotel in Riga. Spend free time in Riga, the capital of Latvia, which has a UNESCO listed Old Town. Overnight stay at the Rija Domus Hotel 3* or Hotel Konventa Seta 4* or similar.

Day 2: Riga - Parnu - Tallinn (~ 310 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Depart Riga for Tallinn. On the way stop at the Riga Open Air Ethnographic Museum to experience a sample of Latvian country life. Continue your journey via Parnu to Tallinn, driving along the coast so as to explore Kadriorg Palace and the Song Festival grounds in the Pirita district.  Afterwards check-in at the hotel in Tallinn and take a walk through the beautifully walled-in Old Town. Overnight stay at Riga Old Town Hotel 3* or  Viru Square Hotel 4* or similar.

Day 3: Tallinn - Rakvere - Tartu (~ 240 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive through Laahemaa National Park and along the coast, making a stop at the Valaste Waterfall and the beautifully restored Palmse and Sagadi Manors. Continue via Rakvere, the shiny blue Lake Pepsi, and stop for a walk in the beautiful scenery. Check-in at the hotel in Tartu, and explore the beauty of this bustling university city. Overnight stay at Hotel Dorpat 3* or similar.

Day 4: Tartu - Sigulda (~ 200 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Explore the beautiful hilly landscape of southern Estonia and pay a visit to the country’s Winter Capital: Otepaa. Drive through the border town of Valga/Valka to the medieval city of Cesis and onwards to scenic Sigulda. Overnight stay at Hotel Sigulda 3* or similar. 

Day 5: Sigulda - Jurmala (~ 115 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Take a walk through the Gauja Valley and enjoy the beautiful nature of Latvia’s ‘Little Switzerland'. Drive to the seaside resort of Jurmala, with its huge sandy blue-flag beach. Overnight stay at Alba Hotel Jurmala 3* or Semarah Lielupe Hotel 4* or similar.

Day 6: Jurmala - Hill of Crosses - Klaipeda (~ 315 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Visit the movie town of Cinevilla, near Tukums, where you will have the opportunity to walk around a live film set. Drive to the port city of Klaipeda, with an en-route stop at the Hill of Crosses. If you like shopping, then pay a visit to the large shopping centre Akropolis. Overnight stay at 3* Old Mill Hotel or 4* Euterpe Hotel or similar. 

Day 7: Klaipeda - Nida - Klaipeda (~ 100 km)

Breakfast in the hotel. Cross the Curonian Lagoon by ferry to reach the nature reserve of the Curonian Spit – lush parks, small villages and beautiful sand dunes. When you reach Nida, take a stroll or a cycle through this beautiful town with its distinct wooden houses and fantastic restaurants. En-route to or from Klaipeda, if time permits, pay a visit to the only Dolphinarium in the Baltics. Overnight stay at 3* Old Mill Hotel or 4* Euterpe Hotel or similar.

Day 8: Klaipeda - Kaunas - Vilnius (~ 310 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Break up your journey to Vilnius by making a stop in the former capital of Lithuania, Kaunas, and visit the 9th Fort museum or surprising Devil's museum. Continue the journey to Vilnius, where you'll have some free time. Overnight stay at Domus Maria Hotel 3* or Neringa Hotel 4* or similar.

Day 9: Vilnius - Rundale Palace - Riga (~ 320 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy the beautiful Old Town of Vilnius with its fine buildings and narrow streets. Drive via the Panevezys highway to Bauska, and pay a visit to the magnificent 18th Century Rundale Palace, once the summer residence of the Duke of Courland. Continue to Riga and stay overnight at the Rija Domus Hotel or Hotel Konventa Seta 4*  or similar.

Day 10: Departure from Riga

Breakfast at the hotel. You may have some free time in Riga depending on your flight departure time. Drop off rental car at Riga airport. Depart Riga.

Itinerary
