  Country holidays Latvia

Enjoy beautiful, unspoiled landscapes and quaint villages with a country holiday in Latvia. There are four distinct seasons, which create ample opportunity for a wide range of outdoor activities. The summers are warm and the days are long. This is a great time to take a boat trip on the Gauja River, go trekking on horseback through the cool forests, or spend a peaceful day trout fishing on a crystal clear lake.

The autumn brings cooler evenings, the first signs of frost and beautiful, bright coloured leaves. This is a great time for a walking holiday on the many nature trails in the national parks.
In the winter, a blanket of snow covers the land. The lakes and rivers freeze, and become dotted with ice fisherman and elk roam the forests. The rolling hills turn to ski slopes (see Winter Fun) and cross country skis and ice skates replace bikes and trainers.
In spring the meadows are full of wild flowers and by May the apple and cherry trees are in full bloom not to mention the smell of fresh strawberries. This is a great time for cycling and picnics in the grassy fields or along the rocky river banks.
Spring ends and summer begins with St. John's Day, a day when the sun practically doesn't set and Latvians continue an ancient tradition of paying homage to water, fire and plants. It's a national holiday, and quite an experience to participate in the all night celebration of singing, dancing and feasting.
