What Are Iceland's Top Attractions?

No trips to Iceland are complete without visiting Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, mirroring the surrounding volcanic country side. The most northern capital in the world has nature lying right on its doorstep. Reykjavik gives you the chance to bathe yourself not only in the Northern Lights and the many geothermal pools, but also in the brilliant music and arts scene, not to mention the notorious night life! Trips to Iceland, to this truly modern city providing great food, amazing scenery, museums and shopping facilities have become ever growing in popularity with more packages becoming available by the day.

When arranging your Iceland holidays, be sure to ride down the surrounding ski slopes, visit the immense concrete wonder that is Hallgrimskirkja and enjoy the unmissable and panoramic view of the city from its 73-metre-high church tower. Be part of history in the beautiful wooden Hofdi House, and stand in the space where Reagan and Gorbachev in effect ended the Cold War. A visit to the Saga Museum in Reykjavik, will provide you with insight in Viking history and the Icelandic Sagas, one of which is said to have inspired J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings.

Enjoy a concert in the impressive Harpa Concert and Conference Centre or take a 40 minute drive out of the city and submerge yourself in the mineral rich, thermal waters of the famous Blue Lagoon, as popular for Summer Holidays to Iceland as for Iceland winter holidays.

Leave the city behind and travel further into Iceland's dramatic landscape, and see for yourself how the ancient battle between ice and fire still continues to this day, through the immense power outlets of raging water falls, gurgling whirlpools, active volcanoes and geysers ejecting their jet-like eruptions of hot water metres into the air.

What To Do in Iceland?

Iceland has been voted one of the top 10 destinations worldwide for whale watching, but if you prefer to go deep, you can experience some of the best and most challenging dives around, as you swim, snorkel or dive through waters of amazing visibility around the only geothermal underwater chimneys in the world, another popular activity among those arranging trips to Iceland. Want to stay dry? Try your hand at ice climbing, arctic rafting on the Hvita river or take a snowmobile across the Langjokull Glacier.

At Thingvellir National Park in Iceland, you can watch the Gullfoss waterfall tumble 32 metres down or walk between the American and European tectonic plates at this Unesco heritage site, the place of Iceland's first National Assembly dating back to 930 AD.

When selecting from our range of Iceland holiday packages, be sure to consider experiencing the crevasse-riddled outlet glacier of Solheimajokull and enjoy this magnificent frozen wonder with its ice formations and sink holes. Hike through Laugavegurinn amid endless hours of summer daylight and even more breathtaking scenery.

During your trips to Iceland, ensure you also visit Europe's largest National Park, Vatnajokull, and its blue iced glacier, gurgling whirlpools and cascading waterfalls. For the adventurous individuals, we can highly recommend a caving trek in lava caves and craters.

An honourable mention must however go to the four legged part of this remarkable nation, the Icelandic horse. This sure-footed, much admired and immensely strong little horse cannot only carry a very heavy burden, but is an integral part of Icelandic society and history. It is a living national treasure, loved and respected by all. They are anybody's to ride and have a special gait that makes it almost impossible for anyone not to enjoy the ride. So if you want a truly authentic way of seeing this country, let this intelligent, people loving, little horse lead you on a highly recommended adventure.

Hello Daina,

Yes, I am well after having a lovely holiday to Reykjavik and of course a day trip to Kulusuk.

In reply to your question, Kulsuk was wonderful!  The first view from the aeroplane window was breath taking!  I had never seen a country covered by snowy mountains ( even though I have been skiing).  The sun was shining brightly, it seemed very near and the sky was clear.  It was 2C but I did not feel it.  The 6km return walk to the village was very pleasant and I was nearly sweating under my jacket.  The village people were very friendly and we were entertained by a drum dance performed by a young woman.  I am very glad that I chose to go to Greenland.

Reykjavik too was a lovely city and by the end of my six day trip, I seemed to know every nook and corner as I walked almost everywhere.  I did not go any food tours as there seemed to be too much food about and I am a small eater.  The weather could have been better, but I managed  and when the sun did come out it was warm!  My experiences -

The Golden Circle tour - I thoroughly enjoyed the two staged Gulfoss waterfall ( was better than Niagara) and the Geysir ( two types of hot springs ).

The Blue Lagoon - after an hour, felt lovely and hot in cold and wet Iceland.

Burid cheese shop - http://blog.burid.is/english was worth a visit, where the manager is very passionate about Icelandic cheeses. Address - Grandagardi 35, Reykjavik 101, Iceland

The Phallological museum which was unusual

The half day Lava tunnel tour was very informative.

Icelandic food that I tried and  liked - fish - cod and blue ling,  the meat soup made from lamb

Drinks-  beer and liqueur made from rhubarb - Rabarbara

Ice cream - Danish liquorice

Also had a large Skyr with fresh fruit  for one lunch

The Hotel -  it was very central, the staff were very helpful in all ways.  The room was spacious and faced the main square which I liked.

Negative points of the room - the shower cubicle was tiny.  At first I thought the slightly bad smell in the cubicle was from the sulphured water, later I realised it was from the drain.  I complained and it was probably rectified as it did not smell that bad anymore.

Thank you.

Sunithi

Hi Inga

Just wanted to say a big thank you for your help in booking the holiday to Iceland. We had an amazing time! The hotel was brilliant- perfect location and excellent breakfast. The tour with Gateway to Iceland was the highlight of the trip. Really good company and it was great to be part of a small group.

All the arrangements were great- you made it very easy and we hope to return again in the future to see more!

unfortunatley, we didn't get to see the northern lights as the weather was bad. Does that get refunded automatically?

thanks again

Hi Julija

Thanks for the email.

Yes we did have an amazing time in Reykjavik and the hotel was in superb location. They also welcomed us with happy birthday for Kevin witch chocolates, balloons and sparkling wine - which was excellent!

All excursions were really good but one of them has been cancelled and we were not informed about it until we start talking to other people who were waiting for the bus. Company Grey lines said they notify you guys but this was Tuesday morning and we were standing for over 40 minutes waiting for the bus (we were worried if we go back to hotel we might miss the bus). You might think of the best way to inform customers where excursion is cancelled.

Luckily gray line was accommodating and we were able to exchange to another trip!

Overall - great trip - amazing Iceland, beautiful memories - THANK YOU

My tip - you might want to suggest some places to eat/drink ect.

Many thanks

Gosia

Dear Lena,

Thanks for your email and good wishes..

I am back home now but been busy since I have been back..

My trip to Iceland, although it rained quite a bit on day 2, I found it to be very enjoyable and also memorable.

It was a pity that it rained on the day we had the glacier hike, so that prevented me from fully enjoying and appreciating the glacier but I am so pleased that I did go despite the rain. The cloudy weather did not give us a a chance to see the northern lights...   Anyhow the weather unfortunately is something one cannot predict...

Nevertheless, I am so grateful that I had this opportunity.

Also my flight back got delayed by 2 hours...  ...  But that again was something beyond any of our control too.

Nevertheless, my holiday to Iceland has been a delightful experience.

Perhaps one day I will go back to see the northern area of Iceland in more pleasant weather conditions! and in summer...

I wish to thank you and Inga for all your help in planning and organising my trip to Iceland. You were both very helpful and well versed which made it easier to plan especially due to my cirucumstances as this was a last minute booking. You were both very understanding doing your best to meet my needs. It has all been very much appreciated.

Thanking you.

Kind regards,

Mary-Anne

Hi Lena,

I hope you are well.

I can honestly say that was the best holiday I have ever had!

In the days we spent at Rekjavik we booked ourselves into the Blue Lagoon and went Snowmobiling, so we were already in love before we then left for the Glacier, Geysers and Northern Lights part of the holiday.

We were also very lucky to get a full Northern Lights show and have some unbelievable pictures, that all of our Facebook friends are fed up of seeing...!

My wife and I want to do another similar holiday later this year, maybe back to Iceland but driving ourselves around for 10 days or so (let me know if you have anything) or maybe Norway and Greenland - we will definitely come back to you when we are ready to book (feel free to email options now if you like!!)

Thank you very much and I am sure this won't be the last time you hear from me.

All the best

Lee
