Discover the beauty of Estonia's
national parks or the history and culture of its charming towns. There is more to Estonia than Tallinn. Dense forests, rivers, lakes and waterfalls abound in northern Estonia, where you will find
Lahemaa National Park. It was the first national park in the Soviet Union, founded in 1971. In addition to the occasional bear, wolf or lynx, you will find beautiful
manor houses of German landlord families dating back to the 18th century.
Heading east you arrive in
Narva, the city where Estonian and Russian cultures meet. Today the atmosphere is friendly, but you can see from the close proximity of the castle of the Order of Germanic nights and the Russian fortress of Ivangorod, that the tensions were high. As you travel to the south eastern part of Estonia you will come across
Tartu, a lively university town with a rich academic tradition. This part of the country also features the small town of
Otepaa, which transforms in the winter to host an annual
cross country skiing World Cup event. Head west and you will reach the Baltic Sea coast and the resort town of
Parnu.
