Summer off the beaten track

  Trebinje

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a hidden gem for summer holidays. With its mix of historic towns, dramatic mountains, rivers perfect for swimming or rafting, and a warm Mediterranean climate in the south, it offers a unique and refreshing alternative to the more familiar summer destinations. Whether you are wandering through cobbled streets, cooling off by a waterfall or enjoying coffee in a shaded courtyard, summer here has a slow, charming rhythm all of its own.

This is a country where East meets West in fascinating ways, and summer is the perfect time to explore its rich culture and natural beauty at your own pace.

Sarajevo: A City at the Crossroads between East and West

Sarajevo has always been a meeting place for different cultures, peoples and ideas, a link between East and West. Though traces of the siege of the 1990s can still be seen, the city today is once again thriving, and proud of its revival as a centre of multi-cultural tolerance, diversity and traditional hospitality.

More about Summer off the beaten track

In summer, the historic city of Mostar is one of the highlights. Its famous bridge, colourful old bazaar and riverside cafés create a lively yet laid-back atmosphere. You can take a dip in the Neretva River, visit nearby traditional villages, or spend time at the waterfalls of Kravica where locals go to relax and cool off.

The capital, Sarajevo, also shines in summer. Surrounded by green hills, its mix of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian influences gives the city a character that feels both familiar and completely unique. There are plenty of open-air cafés, festivals and food markets to enjoy, and the long daylight hours make it easy to explore at a relaxed pace.

Beyond the cities, Bosnia and Herzegovina offers untouched nature and outdoor adventures. The Dinaric Alps provide excellent hiking opportunities, while rivers like the Una and Tara are ideal for rafting, kayaking or simply enjoying a picnic on the banks. The country’s lesser-known beauty spots are often blissfully quiet even in high summer, giving you space to breathe and experience the landscape without crowds.
