In late May 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to join a trip through the stunning regions of Senja and Harstad in Northern Norway. This itinerary offered an unforgettable taste of Arctic beauty, rich local culture, and inspiring tourism products.
Day 1: Arrival in Tromso & Journey to Senja
Our adventure began on 26th May in the lively Arctic city of Tromso. We gathered in the city center, where a warm welcome and a light meal awaited us. It was here that we met our enthusiastic tour leader, Stefan, who expertly guided us throughout the journey.
In the afternoon, we boarded the express boat to Finnsnes — a scenic voyage through fjords that perfectly set the tone for the trip. Upon arrival, we transferred to the southern part of Senja Island for our first site inspection at Norwegian Wild. We were treated to delicious fish soup and a heartwarming visit with the huskies — a wonderful introduction to the region’s genuine hospitality.

We ended the day at the beautiful Hamn i Senja. The outdoor jacuzzi and sauna, surrounded by the calm evening, provided the perfect way to relax.
Day 2: Scenic Senja & Coastal Charm
After our breakfast at Hamn i Senja, we explored the property and took part in a morning boat trip, showcasing the area’s adventurous possibilities. During the trip, we learned that Hamn i Senja’s roots date back to the 1600s. Once a bustling trading post and fishing village established by merchant Adolf Lund in the 1800s, it later became home to a nickel mine and one of the world’s earliest hydroelectric power stations. From 1925 to 1935, Hamn thrived as a major fish landing hub. After a devastating fire in 2005, it was rebuilt and transformed into a holiday resort, now nationally acclaimed for its tourism offerings.

Next, we visited the charming village of Torsken, where we had a brief but fascinating tour of a Torrfisk factory, learning how traditional dried fish snacks are made. We then enjoyed a rib boat tour, taking in the spectacular coastal scenery from the water. For a delicious lunch, we were warmly welcomed at the Senja by Heart restaurant, before continuing our journey along the breathtaking Senja Scenic Route — a drive that offers dramatic coastlines and towering mountains, and is truly a must for any Northern Norway itinerary.

In the afternoon, we stopped for a site inspection at Camp Steinfjord, a charming base for fishing and outdoor adventures. Set in a beautifully converted fish factory on Senja’s northwestern coast, Camp Steinfjord enjoys a dramatic location near 69°N. Thanks to its heritage as a former fish-processing hub, the surrounding waters remain rich fishing grounds, renowned for cod, halibut, coalfish, wolfish, and more. In April 2017, the site underwent a major transformation, when Swedish investors carefully refurbished the property into a modern, welcoming fishing camp. Today, it offers comfortable accommodations, a seaside restaurant, a fully equipped gear shop, and premium boats for unforgettable Arctic experiences. After a quick snack and a warm presentation at Camp Steinfjord, we continued to Mefjord Brygge, a traditional fishing village turned cozy resort. Dinner at Salteriet, Mefjord Brygge’s inviting restaurant, provided us with delicious local flavors in a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.

Day 3: Arctic Experiences & Transfer to Harstad
We began the day with a resort inspection at Mefjord Brygge, a picturesque property that beautifully combines the charm of a traditional fishing village with the comfort of modern facilities. Set against a stunning fjord backdrop, Mefjord Brygge offers cozy accommodations, excellent dining, and easy access to outdoor activities, making it an ideal base for exploring Senja.
Following the site visit, we set out on a scenic hike to Knuten, a nearby viewpoint that provided breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding fjords and dramatic mountain landscapes. The hike was a great chance to enjoy Senja’s beautiful, unspoiled nature and take in the peaceful, wild scenery.

By lunchtime, we had arrived at Camp Fjordbotn, where we were warmly welcomed with a delicious fish soup and an informative presentation about the camp’s offerings and activities.
In the afternoon, we visited Comfort Hotel Finnsnes for a site inspection before boarding the express boat to Harstad.
Upon arrival in Harstad, we checked into the modern Thon Hotel Harstad and enjoyed a delicious dinner, closing another memorable day.
Day 4: Harstad’s Rich History & Coastal Hospitality
Our final full day started with a presentation from Explore Harstad, providing great insights into the area’s tourism potential.
A highlight of the day was the visit to Trondenes Historical Centre and Trondenes Medieval Farm, where we stepped back in time to learn about the Viking and medieval history of the region. We also visited Trondenes Church, the world’s northernmost medieval stone church, and toured the Adolf cannon, a powerful World War II relic (remember, official ID is required for entry).

After lunch and a site inspection at Scandic Harstad, we explored the charming Home Hotel Arcticus before heading to the breathtaking Elgsnes Beach, known for its stunning coastal views and peaceful surroundings. As we arrived, the fresh sea air and the sound of waves set the perfect tone for a memorable afternoon. We gathered around a warm, crackling fire, where freshly made Norwegian waffles were served, a delightful treat paired with jam and hot drinks. The atmosphere was relaxed and joyful as some members of our group braved the cold and took a refreshing dip in the Arctic waters, adding an adventurous highlight to the day.

In the evening, we transferred to the picturesque Rokenes Gard, a beautifully preserved historic estate dating back to the 17th century. Surrounded by rolling countryside and with views of the fjord, this elegant venue offered both cultural charm and a sense of tranquility. We enjoyed a site inspection of the property, appreciating its art gallery, rustic architecture, and the warm hospitality of the hosts. The visit culminated in a lovely farewell dinner featuring local delicacies, beautifully presented in the cozy, atmospheric dining room. It was a perfect setting to reflect on the experiences of the trip before returning to Quality Hotel Harstad for our final night.

Day 5: Departure to Tromso
On our final morning, we boarded the express boat back to Tromso, enjoying a scenic three-hour journey through the majestic fjords—a peaceful and fitting end to our time in the region. Upon arrival in Tromso, I had some free time before my flight, which I used to explore the Polar Museum, offering fascinating insights into Arctic expeditions and the city’s polar history. Afterward, I took a convenient shuttle bus from the Prostneset ferry terminal to Tromso Airport to catch my flight home, marking the end of this unforgettable journey.
