Finland

Posted on July 8th, 2013.

Finland is a land of endless summer days and the Northern Lights, that features barren Arctic landscapes in the North, thousands of tiny islands in the South, vast, unspoiled forests and countless, crystal clear lakes in between – not forgetting that it’s the home of Father Christmas. Here you can find the biggest snow castles, the biggest archipelago, the most saunas and the zaniest summer activities.

Summer holidays in Finland allow you to experience a wide range of activities. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy camping, hiking through the endless forests and canoeing on the sparkling lakes. You can enjoy the wildlife during a bear watching trip or relax with a round of golf or at a spa. Finland offers fantastic salmon fishing for the enthusiast and white water rafting for the thrill seeker, in its abundant waterways.

It’s a country for all seasons. Winter holidays in Finland feature downhill and cross country skiing, skating, snow shoeing and snowmobiling. Don’t miss an unforgettable reindeer or husky sled ride through the eerily quiet, snow covered wilds. Why not try a dip in a hole in the ice or spend the night in an igloo – a truly once in a lifetime experience! Of course there are the mysteries and attractions of the Arctic, such as the mystical Northern Lights and magical Father Christmas. Days are spent enjoying the crisp, frosty climate, while evenings are for soothing saunas and crackling fires.

Summer brings the sun, the blueberries and the cloudberries. The Finns love a festival and there is a wide array of art and music festivals, some more traditional than others, like the Savonlinna Opera Festival or Pori Jazz Festival. There are some really quirky activities that take place during the summer as well, such as the Mobile Phone Throwing World Championships, annual wife-carrying competition in Sonkajärvi and swamp football in Hyrynsalmi. After a long, dark winter, the Finns really look forward to the summer and create a very friendly and enjoyable atmosphere for all.
