The Moscow Kremlin, or the Kremlin as it is informally known around the city, is a historic area at the centre of Moscow. The Kremlin is a fortified compound that was built in the city, overlooking many of the cities great sights and spots such as the Alexander Garden to the western end, the Red Square, and the fmous Saint Basil’s Cathedral to the eastern side, and the Moskva River to the south.

The Moscow Kremlin is the official residential complex of the President of Russia. The Kremlin houses within its boundaries four cathedrals, four palaces, the Kremlin towers, and the bordering Kremlin Wall.

Significance of the Name

The term “Kremlins” refers to the Russian citadels that were built around the empire, and the Moscow Kremlin is by far the most famous of them all. Since it is the political seat of power in the country, the phrase ‘The Kremlin’ has become synonymous with ‘the government’, so much so that it is used  to depict the ‘government and authorities of the Soviet Union’. It is in the same manner in which the phrase ‘White House’ or ‘Quai d’Orsay’ refer to the American and French governments respectively, the Kremlin has come to stand for the system in the Soviet Union. The term “Kremlinology” refers to the study and research of various facets of the working, administration and policies of Russia and the Soviet Union.

Accessing/ Reaching the Kremlin Museum

For first time travellers, reaching the Kremlin and the Kremlin Museum is easy, as you only need to be able to find the correction metro stations. The subway stations that are closest to the Kremlin museum are the “Biblioteka imeni Lenina” and the “Borovitskaya” stations.

Visiting the Moscow Kremlin Museum

The visiting compounds of the Kremlin and the museums associated with the Moscow Kremlin are open and accessible to the public all through the week except for on Thursdays. The compounds are open from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The famous Armoury Chamber within the compounds has séances at 10:00 AM, 12:00 PM, 2:30 PM and 4:30 PM every day.

Purchasing Tickets to Visit The Kremlin

In order to be able to visit the Kremlin and the different museums associated with it, one has to buy tickets in advance. The ticket offices can be found at various locations. Some of the easiest spots to locate are the Armoury Chamber, the Kutafiya Tower, the Aleksandrov Gardens, and the Cathedral Square. As is the case with the complex itself, the ticket counters remain open all through the week except for on Thursdays. The ticket counters are open to the public from 9:30 AM to 4:30 PM.

What to Visit within The Kremlin

Built by grand Italian artists and craftsmen through the ages, the various buildings inside the Kremlin boundaries are all uniquely beautiful. The Cathedral Square at the heart of the compound houses three beautiful cathedrals. The Church of the Twelve Apostles, the Ivan the Great Bell Tower, the Church of the Deposition of the Robe and the Arsenal are other jewels of the Kremlin.
