St. Isaac's Cathedral

St. Isaac's Cathedral was the primary Cathedral in St. Petersburg for over 40 years after it was finished in 1858. The golden dome is outstanding in its glory and is the fourth biggest single-domed Cathedrals in the world.

Nicholas I hired French architect August Montferrand to create this amazing Cathedral. Montferrand built the Cathedral for 40 years from his 30s until his death when he was 70 years old. St. Isaac's facade is Finnish granite and decorated with bas-reliefts. Many sculptures like figures of the twelve apostles, four Evangelists, and angels can be found around the exterior of the Cathedral. Inside the Cathedral the walls are decorated by amazing paintwork done by famous Russian painters and worth a visit.
