St. Basils Cathedral

By Asla

St. Basils Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of Vasily the Blessed, is located on the Red Square in Moscow and the most popular tourist destination in Moscow. It was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible in 16th century. It was finished in 1560 and was built to mark the capture of Kazan from the Mongol forces, the saying goes. The somewhat "crazy" combination of colours is and the runours goes that it was created such that it could not be compared to anything and is said to be nothing but urban folklore. A tower was added in the 17th century and the gallery and staircases covered with vaulted roofing and the paiting was made even more complex. There has been talk of demolishing the Cathedral ( rumours go as the hindered Stalins mass parades on the Red Square ) but in any ase, it is still standing and now a Museum.

More about St. Basils Cathedral

Visitors can now take a wooden staircase ( which has been restored after this original staircase was found within the walls ) to enter the Cathedral, with its unusual kind of tented roof and fine iconostasis from the 16th century and you can walk along the winding gallery, which is very narrow and covered in beautiful patterned paintwork.

There is a service once a year in the Cathedral, otherwise it is just a museum, but an usually colourful one that is definately worth seeing.
