Peter and Paul Fortress

By St. Petersburg

The Peter and Paul Fortress is a very famous landmark in St. Petersburg, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and is the original citadel of St. Petersburg. It was built by Domenico Trezzini in the early 17 hundreds. It was used as a prison during the Tsar times. It is located on a small island in St. Petersburg called Zayachy.

Now it is open to the public being part of the State Museum of St. Petersburgs History, which now mostly owns this historic fortress building.

More about Peter and Paul Fortress

The cathedral is the burial place of all Russian Tsars from Peter the 1st to Alexander 3rd, with a couple of exceptions. Even the Queen Dagmar ( also known as Maria Feodorovna buried in Denmark, Roskilde Cathedral ) was brought to the Peter and Paul Fortress to be reinterred next to her husband Alexander the 3rd.

From the fortress walls you have a view over the sandy beaches that have become very popular in St. Petersburg that in summer become very overcrowded.
