Church on the Spilled Blood

By Daina Kontrima

This amazingly beautiful Church located in the middle of St. Petersburg. It was built between 1883 and 1907 as is known under a few names, namely the Temple of the Saviour on Spilled Blood,

Even if it is not located on the grand Nevsky Prospekt, it provides an amazing view from the bridge over the Kanal Griboyedova and located on the bank of the Canal.

It has, of course, some drama behind it as Alexander the 2nd was assassinated here in 1881, and the Church was starting being built in 1883, finished in 1907. So the name comes from the fact the Alexander was stabbed to his death here.

More about Church on the Spilled Blood

The architecture is different from the typical structure of St. Petersburg, which is typically Baroque and Neoclassical, whereas the Church on the Spilled Blood is more the medieval Russian architectural style in the romantic nationalisn with lots of Russian style colourful domes, glazed tiles in equally colourful themes decor. The main architect was Alfred Alexandrovich Parland ( indeed non-Russian born ).

It was restored and completed in 1997 and remains one of the top attractions and is definately worth a visit.
