Winter in Latvia countryside by latviatourism.lv Riga at Christmas time by Baiba Kasa

Latvia Winter Holidays

Riga at Christmas time by Baiba Kasa

If the rainy, dark UK winters are getting you down, head to Latvia for some winter fun. It's easy to get there (with direct flights from London and Manchester), and if you go during the winter, the flights aren't crowded.

Latvia is by no means a country known for downhill skiing, but the winters are snowy and there are numerous ski hills that offer downhill skiing and snowboarding. The runs are short and the terrain is easy, but if you are just learning, you'll find the short lift lines and friendly instructors ideal for preparing you for the Alps. There are snowboard parks for more advanced riders who want to get some air and the ski areas run slalom races for more advanced skiers. You can ski under the lights till midnight, even later on weekends. You can hire the latest equipment, get a private instructor fan hour and an all day lift pass for less than £20.

More about Latvia Winter Holidays

If you're not interested in the hills, strap on a pair of cross country skis and head for the many trails where you might even catch a glimpse of an elk. Relax with a sleigh ride through the peaceful forests and listen to the snow crunch beneath the hoofs of your horse. If you're in Riga, head for one of the many outdoor ice rinks. It's particularly fun skating in Livu Square, amidst the backdrop of the delightful Old Town architecture.

Winter is also a time to enjoy the Christmas markets and spending your evenings by a crackling fire enjoying some warm drinks and good music. There are plenty of concerts and cultural events going on during the winter (see Music Festivals in Latvia) and it's always fun to go gallery hopping and shopping in the boutiques of Riga.
