Estonia is a great place for a winter break. It's easy to get there (direct flights from London Gatwick and Stansted) and during the winter, the flights aren't crowded.

We suggest splitting your time between the historical medieval capital Tallinn and the hills of southeast Estonia near Otepaa. Enjoy Tallinn's charming Old Town and the luxuries of the city as well as the peace of the snowy hills and charm of a log cabin with a private sauna and crackling fire.

The country is not known for downhill skiing, but the winters are snowy and there are numerous ski hills that offer downhill skiing and snowboarding. The runs are short and the terrain is easy, but if you are just learning, you'll find the short lift lines and friendly instructors ideal for preparing you for the Alps. You can hire the latest equipment, get a private instructor for an hour and an all day lift pass for less than £20. If skiing or snowboarding is not your thing, then strap on a pair of skates or cross country skis. You can also enjoy the winter landscapes with a sleigh ride and let the horses do the work.

If you would prefer to just enjoy winter scenery and atmosphere at room temperature, then take a short break to Tallinn.  Tallinn's annual Christmas Market is rapidly becoming one of Northern Europe's holiday events.
