The Rorbu Tour

11 days / 10 nights from £2,195 pp

Northern Norway is known for rough winters, Northern lights and remote places. But as well during the summer this region is a paradise for tourists, offering stunning landscape, pure, fresh air and many possibilities for activities. During this tour you will stay in the typical accommodation of Northern Norway – a Rorbu. Travel back to the past and live in the traditional accommodation the fishermen used during the fishing season. These shacks were built as a temporary shelter in regions where a normal living was not possible. Now many of them have been restored and offer a comfortable but still authentic living experience. Travel from the Paris of the North, Tromsø, to the charming Lofoten and Vesterålen islands and then up to the Majestic Lyngen Alps.

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN TROMSØ - SOMMARØY (60km)
Arrival in Tromsø. Pick up your rental car. According to your arrival time we recommend you to catch a short glimpse of Tromsø with its beautiful old and historic wooden houses that co-exist with modern architecture. Tromsø has been named after the island of Tromsøya, which it is situated on. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church from 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsø. Continue across the island of Kvaløya to Sommarøy. The island is a fascinating pearl of nature, where you meet chalk-white beaches, cosy coves, holms and reefs.
Overnight in a Sea cabin of Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.

DAY 2: SOMMARØY
Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy your day in the peace of the small community Sommarøy. Get in touch with the fantastic nature. The proximity to the great ocean does something to you, be it in the dead calm or fierce storms, whether you’re are outside or crawling into a comfy chair in the sea cabin, right out at sea. You can switch off you everyday worries and just be in this calm and pure place.
Overnight in a Sea cabin of Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.

DAY 3: SOMMARØY – ANDENES (145 km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Today it is time to leave one paradise. But no worries, the next one is just around the corner. Drive in south eastern direction and after a short while you will reach your first ferry crossing from Brensholme to Botnhamn. You reach the island of Senja. Among the sights of interest here we recommend Ånderdalen National Park, traditional fishing communities and the world's largest troll: Senja Trollet (The Troll of Senja). After another ferry crossing from Gryllefjord to Andenes you have reached your destination for the day – the Vesterålen Islands.
Accommodation in Lankanholmen Sea Cabins.

DAY 4: ANDENES, WHALE WATCHING
Breakfast at the hotel, and the time has come to enjoy, in our opinion one of the highlights of the tour. Meet up with the rest of the group at Whale museum in Andenes. After a guided visit, departure by boat from the fishing village for a full day out seas. This is a whole day at sea (7-8 hours) and offers you a grand opportunity to see several species of whale and exotic sea birds. After a successful day at sea, return to the hotel.
Accommodation in Lankanholmen Sea Cabins.

DAY 5: ANDENES – HENNINGSVÆR (230 km)
Breakfast at the hotel. From Andenes continue south across the Vesterålen islands, passing through small towns, make a stop in the old trading centre Stokmarknes to visit the museum of the famous coastal express Hurtigruten. The need for transportation of fish, post and goods from Stokmarknes started the route along the coast and the traditional Hurtigruten was created. This route is now called one of the world’s most beautiful sea voyages. Continue to Lofoten using the ferry crossing Melbu – Fiskebøl. Discover more about these amazing islands and enjoy the beautiful nature. Driving south you will pass by Svolvær, known as the Lofoten Capital, and through the Lofast, the new fairway combining tunnels and bridges that is connecting Lofoten to the mainland and the Vesterålen islands. Tonight you will stay in the charming fisherman’s village of Henningsvær – there is no more authentic place to stay in a fisherman’s cabin then this cosy village.
Accommodation in Henningsvær Rorbuer.

DAY 6 & 7: HENNINGSVÆR
Breakfast at the hotel and your two days can be enjoyed at leisure as you explore the Lofoten islands, which stretch like a wall of mountains from the southwest in the sea. Lofoten means mountain peaks, open sea and protected bays. Thanks to the Golf Stream the climate here is milder than in other parts of the world at the same latitude. To get to know the archipelago we recommend a scheduled guided trip, which takes you all over Lofoten and gives you a first impression of the beauty of the archipelago. Let a guide do the job for once and pick what you want to discover more closely during the coming days. For the more active amongst you we recommend a scheduled hiking trip. Forget your everyday stress and get immersed into the stunning and pure landscape around you. A guide will lead the way, so you can’t get lost.
Accommodation in Henningsvær Rorbuer.

DAY 8: HENNINGSVÆR – NARVIK (140km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Drive from Henningsvær towards Svolvær. A ferry will take you to the Norwegian mainland, to Skutvik. Continue along the coast with a magnificent view of many islands and islets that rise from the sea. A ferry will take you cross the Tysfjord from Bognes to Skarberget. Continue along the Ofotfjord and you will reach Narvik, where you will find many monuments to commemorate the battle of Narvik in 1940 during World War II.
Accommodation in Quality Hotel Grand Narvik.

DAY 9: NARVIK – OLDERDALEN (290km)
Breakfast at the hotel. Through the region of Troms you head towards the Lyngen Alps. These unique and untouched alpine mountains lie on a peninsula, and are popular among experienced mountain climbers and extreme skiers, and provide stunning scenery against the blue fjords. Here you will find mountain peaks rising more than 1,000 metres directly from the fjord, blue glaciers, cascading rivers, gleaming mountain lakes and deep ravines.
Accommodation in Lyngen Lodge.

DAY 10: OLDERDALEN – TROMSØ (90km)
Breakfast at the lodge. Today you can enjoy the panorama of the Lyngen Apls again by driving through them. Take your time and enjoy the nature. Maybe you will meet one of the many inhabitants of the Alps. Many birds of prey, reindeer during the summer, and elk, wolverines and lynx all year-round can be found here. After two ferry crossings from Olderdalen to Lyngseidet and from Svensby to Breivikeidet you will soon reach Tromsø. Enjoy your evening in the city. Why not catching a glimpse of the midnight sun from Storsteinen the town landmark mountain? A cable car, called Fjellheisen, will take you up here.
Accommodation in Clarion Hotel Bryggen.

DAY 11: DEPARTURE from TROMSØ
Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Tromsø.
