Estonian Islands Itinerary

Day 1: Tallinn-Haapsalu-Rohuküla (HIIUMAA ISLAND) (Ferry)-Heltermaa-Kärdla-Kõpu-Käina(Kassari)- 135 km, ferry 1,5 hours
From the ferry port Rohuküla take the ferry to Heltermaa ferry port on the island of Hiiumaa.
Hiiumaa is famous for its virgin nature, picturesque coastal landscapes and a peaceful pace of life. The county centre KÄRDLA is a cosy little town with small wooden houses, beautiful gardens and a nice beach. The KÕPU LIGHTHOUSE– the symbol of Hiiumaa – rising high above treetops attracks the eye from a great distance. This imposing structure was erected in the first half of the 16th century and is the world's third-oldest operating lighthouse. The windy, shingled beach of the RISTNA Peninsula has made it a popular surfing centre. REIGI is famous for its church . Near Kärdla is Ristimägi (CROSS HILL) with thousands of crosses made by visitors from rocks, leaves or branches. At the tip of TAHKUNA Peninsula there is a fine lighthouse and a memorial to the children who perished in the disaster of the ferry Estonia. The shoreline of the peninsula is ideal for long walks in search of inner calm. The splendid SUUREMÕISA CASTLE is close by.Driving towards KÄINA one passes the Vaemla wool factory where one can watch the work of centuries-old machinery, buy local products and refreshments in the cafe. The narrow SÄÄRE peninsula in the southwest of KASSARI ISLAND stretches far into the sea; with its warm coastal water it is a great sunbathing and bathing spot. Both Kassari and Käina offer plenty of places for dining and staying the night.  Overnight in guest house in Kassari

Day 2: Take a ferry from SÕRU ferryport (25-40 km depending on acc.place) to TRIIGI ferryport in Saaremaa island(ferry 45 min.)
Leisi-Panga-Ninase-Kihelkonna-Loona-Sõrve-Kuressaare.

One of the attractions in Saaremaa is the steep and impressive limestone cliff on the northern coast at NINASE and PANGA where it rises 21 m above the sea level.Culturally and historically interesting are the windmills at ANGLA, the medieval , rustic KARJA church, without a steeple is rich in unique hewn sculptures and frescos. In northwest Saaremaa near KIHELKONNA you will find the Mihkli Farm museum. What makes it unique is the fact that the items on display in this fully preserved farmhouse complex have been made on the farm over six generations.SÕRVE Peninsula where in World War II some of the heaviest battles in Estonia took place. Overnight in Kuressaare at Georg Ots Spa Hotel or nearby guesthouse.

Day 3: Kuressaare-Valjala-Kõljala-Kaali lake-Kuressaare
KURESSAARE - the “brand” of Kuressaare is a very well preserved 14th century episcopal castle which houses the Museum of Saaremaa. Visitors of the castle can order medieval dinner and enjoy the view over the town and the sea opening from the tower cafe. The old town, built between the 17th and 19th centuries, abounds in dining and entertainment spots, several high-standard health spas and a yachting harbour. South of Kuressaare lies the protected Loode oak wood, and further down the Sõrve Peninsula. The imposing is VALJALA church, the oldest one in Saaremaa with its unique frescos.Close by are the remains of Valjala Stronghold that was the last in Estonia to surrender to the German Teutonic Knights in 1227.
Near KÕLJALA you will find the roundshaped KAALI LAKE , set in a meteorite crater and, a rare natural object in the context of the whole world. The “space rock” that hit the Kaali area only a few thousand years ago is the last known meteorite to hit a densely populated area. This is why it has shaped not only the local landscape but the mythologu as well. The “Kaali catastrophy” comparable to a nuclear blast, has inspired writers and historians to link the local “big bang” to the roots of Fenno-Ugric mythology or the Phaethon,s flight and fall in Greek mythology. Overnight in Kuressaare at Geor Ots Spa Hotel

DAY 4 Kuressaare-Muhu island-Kuivastu harbour-Tallinn – (240 km)
For taking a ferry from Kuivastu to Virtsu harbour ( 30 min.ferry) you arrive on MUHU island. There is Muhu church in the Gothic style (1267), KOGUVA village with its old farm buildings, stone fences and draw wells, and PÄDASTE MANOR which offers luxury accommodations and top-of-the line cuisine.
Arrival at Virtsu harbour, drive for Tallinn (160 km).
Return of the car.  Overnight in Tallinn at Hotel Domina Il Marine or similar.

Day 5 - Tallinn
Morning to explore the city.  Airport transfers for return flight to UK.
