Top Arctic Holiday Experiences with Baltic Travel Company

Posted on January 31st, 2014.

#1 The Northern Lights

With so much recent press it is obvious to put the Northern Lights as number one on our top holiday experiences. In 2013 the lights were at their brightest for 50 years and in early 2014 it was even possible to spot them in the North of the UK.

Whilst we have some incredible photos of the Northern Lights witnessing this incredible spectacle for themselves is on many peoples bucket lists.

A short break in Iceland seems to be the most popular choice for those seeking out the Aurora Borealis but you can actually travel to many more destinations such as the Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway and Lapland too.

Read our Definitive Travellers Guide to the Northern Lights to find out more and explore our Northern Lights Holidays to begin your adventure.

#2 Seeing the Majestic Polar Bear

Close up encounters with wildlife in their natural habitat is one of those wonderful holiday experiences that you will remember for the rest of your life. Whilst it’s easy to spot some wildlife the opportunity to see a polar bear is rare and most definitely a once in a lifetime experience.

One of the best chances of seeing a vast amount of Arctic wildlife, including the polar bear, is to travel to Svalbard, a group of Norwegian islands about halfway between the mainland and the North Pole.

Here you can discover roaming polar bears, lounging seals, grazing reindeer and colonies of birds. Svalbard is a harsh Arctic region and it’s only possible to explore during a couple of months of the year making tours here sell out very quickly.

See the Realm of the Polar Bear to discover more about trips to Svalbard.

#3 Staying in an Ice Hotel

If you are planning on staying in an ice hotel then make sure you have someone to cuddle up to for extra warmth! Most people only spend one night in an ice hotel for the experience. Therefore it’s worth planning a trip around this one nights stay to visit more of Sweden or Norway.

The world’s first ice hotel was created in Sweden in 1990 and the popularity of ice hotels in Scandinavia has grown since then. Whilst the first ice hotel was incredibly basic and initially just meant to be an exhibition these days you can expect fantastic sculptures, chandeliers and amazing ice design.

The original Ice Hotel invites artists from all over the world each year to help design the art suites.

If you are interested in visiting an Ice Hotel you can view our holidays that include them here.

#4 Winter Adventure

No Arctic holiday experience would be complete without a little bit of adventure. Whilst simple adventure sports such as skiing are very popular you can also seek out some incredible once in a lifetime adventures whilst in the Arctic Region.

Husky sledding, ice climbing, snowmobile safari’s and ice fishing are all great fun and get you out into the real Arctic wilderness.

The best places to visit for some winter adventure would be Northern Norway and Lapland.
