Visby

Visby is the seat of the Gotland Municipality, located in Gotland County, an integral part of Sweden. With a population of 22,236 people, the locality of Visby is one of the most important places on the Gotland Island.

It is also the only place to be awarded historical city status and it is known and celebrated the world over for being the most well preserved medieval city in the region. Owing to the historical significance of the region and its remarkable beauty and maintenance, Visby has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The etymology of the name of the place, “Visby” can be traced back in Old Norse. The term “Vis” means a place of sacrifice while the suffix “by” means “city” and hence the name can be understood to be “a city place where sacrifices are made”.

Stockholm is a fantastic Northern city, worth visiting summer and winter: just dress for the weather. The city boasts attractions situated within a very short distance so you can easily walk or cycle and see the King's Castle near the Old Town. Stockholm has amazing views of the waterside from many locations. The architecture, art, culture and Now-Nordic gourmet on offer is truly outstanding. More about Visby

The most well known features of the place is the 3.4 km long wall made of stone, running around the city and the ruins of the ancient church, known as the Ring Wall.

Found on the western coast of the Gotland Island, Visby is one of the fast developing towns in Scandinavia and Sweden and is quickly becoming an internationally popular tourist destination. The period from June to August is the peak tourist season and Visby comes to life during this time, with vibrant parties, a bustling nightlife, a variety of events and more being organized. Through the remainder of the year the city is generally quiet and makes a nice destination for a relaxing holiday.

Traveling in Visby

Traveling on foot within the city is very popular with the residents, and tourists are advised to give it a shot as well, especially if one is visiting the inner portion of the city known as the Old Town.

The most popular mode of transport in the city is the bicycle and most residents use bicycles on a daily basis. Tourists can rent bicycles as well and there are a number of well-developed bicycle trails around the city, covering almost every region. Bicycle renting can prove to be very expensive if one is staying for an extended period, in which case it is advisable to buy a second-hand cycle.

One can also use the bus system since there are many bus lines spread out in Visby and across the remaining portions of the island.

One can also avail of taxi services for commuting, however as is the case with the rest of Sweden, traveling by taxi is very expensive and is only recommended for very small distances.

One cannot use cars within the city walls of Visby during the summer season so one has to rely on the public transport during the time. There are arrangements made for parking the vehicles free of charge outside the city walls.
