Toompea Hill

An Introduction to the Toompea Hill

Toompea Hill is a major tourist attraction found in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. Toompea Hill is an oblong shaped hill in limestone, 400 meters long and 250 meters wide, and covers over 17 acres of land. The hill is a rather noticeable natural structure from the nearby regions as it is about 25 meters taller than the close by regions.

An interesting local legend surrounds the Toompea Hill. According to folklore, upon the death of the mighty king Kalev, his widow Linda erected a tumulus mound on the grave, and that has now come to be known as Toompea Hill. The legend continues to say that Linda sat on top of the hill and shed tears for her husband, and those tears pooled together to form what is now known as the Ulemiste Lake.

More about Toompea Hill

Significance of Toompea Hill

Toompea Hill is an important historical and tourist attraction in the region and has been incorporated into the listing of the Tallinn Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The rulers and political atmosphere of the region have always closely influenced the shape and face of the entire Toompea Hill region through the annals of time. Presently, the Government of Estonia finds its base in Toompea, as does the parliament. The parliament of Estonia, formally known as the Rilgikogu, has been built in the Toompea Castle which is found close to the southwestern end of the Toompea Hill. The Toompea Castle used to be the governor’s palace during the czarist regime, and continues to be a hot seat of power to date. The parliament building is marked by the Tall Hermann tower present on the building's top. The distinctive flag placed on the tower is one of its most recognizable features, flashing the symbol of the ruling government.

The instantly recognizable, very unique Orthodox Alexander Nevsky Church, the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Estonian Academy of Arts, the Estonian Academy of Sciences and the Estonian Knighthood building, are other important buildings found in the region.

The importance of the area in and around the Toompea Hill is augmented by the fact that it is also home to several foreign embassies in Estonia, some of the notable ones being the Canadian Embassy, the Portuguese Embassy, and the embassy of the Netherlands.

An Interesting Tourist Spot

Toompea Hill is a popular tourist spot because it is deeply steeped in history, culture and natural beauty. By visiting the various buildings one can garner an idea about the politics and working of the region, as well as gain an insight into the history of the place. From the viewing platforms on the hill one can look for miles into the zeniths and enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the Gulf of Finland.
