More about Narvik

A Brief Look At The History Of Narvik

The history of Narvik can be traced back to the Stone Age, when the settlement in the region first began. Research has not been able to unearth enough facts to conclusively structuralize the civilization during this time, but it is believed that the Viking people inhabited the region.

It was around the 1870s that modern Narvik began to grow and develop. This change was due to the realization of the Swedish government of the potential of Narvik to serve as a port for the iron ore exports and transport. Given the warm climate of the region (as a result of the influence of the Gulf Stream), the port at Narvik remained free of ice all year round, and since it was suitably large in size, it was suitable for vessels of all sizes to find anchor. Sweden built a railway to Narvik and since then, the role of the region in trade and export/ import has become crucial.

Watching The Northern Lights In Narvik

The Northern Lights, or the Aurora Borealis, are clearly visible from the town centre in Narvik from August through to April, and this has made the region popular with tourists. The beach is a great place to witness the spectacular lights, since the air is cleaner and the light and air pollution lower, and hence the vibrant colours of the Northern Lights can be experienced in their full glory. Several accommodations offer a great view of the Aurora Borealis and the region has become popular with tourists for this very reason.

Skiing In Narvik

The skiing opportunities in Narvik have made the region one of the most popular tourist destinations in Norway. The town is touted as one of the best, most promising, and most stunning skiing locations in all of Northern Europe. The stunning views offered from the mountains and the fjords along with the various levels of skiing slopes have made Narvik popular with skiers of all levels of expertise.

The Narvikfjellet region is popular with people from all over the world and the wonderful ski resort is known to be one of the best of its kind. The ski slope is situated at a dazzling height of 1000 meters above sea level, and provides all kinds of facilities and amenities for visitors. The professionally created and maintained slopes offer opportunities for off piste skiing, alpine skiing and cross country skiing.

The best months to visit for skiing opportunity are April and May because one can make the most of the dry snow on the slopes and the bright daylight lasts well into the evening.
