Lofoten Rorbu by Terje Rakke, Nordic life, VisitNorway

Overview:

Northern Norway is known for rough winters, Northern lights and remote places. But as well during the summer this region is a paradise for tourists, offering stunning landscape, pure, fresh air and many possibilities for activities. During this tour you will stay in the typical accommodation of Northern Norway – a Rorbu. Travel back to the past and live in the traditional accommodation the fishermen used during the fishing season. These shacks were built as a temporary shelter in regions where a normal living was not possible. Now many of them have been restored and offer a comfortable but still authentic living experience. Travel from the Paris of the North, Tromsø, to the charming Lofoten and Vesterålen islands and then up to the Majestic Lyngen Alps.
Holiday price is from £ 2,195 per person based on availability and two people sharing a standard double/twin room. Single supplement is £1,120.

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Tromsø - Sommarøy (60km)

Arrival in Tromsø. Pick up your rental car. Depending on your arrival time, we recommend you catch a short glimpse of Tromsø, with its beautiful old and historic wooden houses that co-exist with modern architecture. Tromsø has been named after the island of Tromsøya, which it is situated on. The Arctic Cathedral, a modern church built in 1965, is probably the most famous landmark in Tromsø. Continue across the island of Kvaløya to Sommarøy. The island is a fascinating pearl of nature, where you meet chalk-white beaches, cosy coves, holms and reefs. Overnight stay in a Sea cabin at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.

Day 2: Sommarøy

Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy your day in the peace that is the small community of Sommarøy, and get in touch with the fantastic nature. The proximity to the great ocean does something to you, be it in the dead calm or fierce storms, whether you’re are outside or crawling into a comfy chair in the sea cabin, right out at sea. You can switch off your everyday worries and just be in this calm and pure place. Overnight in a Sea cabin at Sommarøy Arctic Hotel.

Day 3: Sommarøy – Andenes (145 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Today it is time to leave this paradise; but no worries, the next one is just around the corner. Drive in a south eastern direction, and after a short while you will reach your first ferry crossing from Brensholme to Botnhamn. You will then reach the island of Senja. Here we recommend that you visit Ånderdalen National Park, traditional fishing communities, and the world's largest troll: Senja Trollet (The Troll of Senja). After another ferry crossing from Gryllefjord to Andenes you have reached your destination for the day – the Vesterålen Islands. Accommodation in Lankanholmen Sea Cabins.

Day 4: Andenes, Whale Watching

Breakfast at the hotel, and the time has come to enjoy, in our opinion, one of the highlights of the tour. Meet up with the rest of the group at the Whale museum in Andenes. After a guided visit, depart by boat from the fishing village for a full day out at sea. This is a whole day at sea (7-8 hours), and it offers you a grand opportunity to see several species of whale and exotic sea birds. After a successful day at sea, return to the hotel. Accommodation in Lankanholmen Sea Cabins.

Day 5: Andenes – Henningsvær (230 km)

Breakfast at the hotel. From Andenes continue south across the Vesterålen islands, passing through small towns, making a stop in the old trading centre Stokmarknes to visit the museum of the famous coastal express Hurtigruten. The need for transportation of fish, post and goods from Stokmarknes started the route along the coast and the traditional Hurtigruten was created. This route is now known as one of the world’s most beautiful sea voyages. Continue to Lofoten using the ferry crossing Melbu – Fiskebøl. Discover more about these amazing islands and enjoy the beautiful nature. Driving south you will pass by Svolvær, known as the Lofoten Capital, and through the Lofast, a new fairway combining tunnels and bridges that connect Lofoten to the mainland and the Vesterålen islands. Tonight you will stay in the charming fisherman’s village of Henningsvær – there is nowhere more authentic to stay in than this cosy village. Accommodation in Henningsvær Rorbuer.

Days 6 – 7: Henningsvær

Breakfast at the hotel, and your two days can be enjoyed at leisure as you explore the Lofoten islands, which stretch like a wall of mountains from the southwest in the sea. Lofoten has mountain peaks, open sea and protected bays. Thanks to the Golf Stream the climate here is milder than in other parts of the world at the same latitude. To get to know the archipelago, we recommend a scheduled guided trip, which takes you all over Lofoten and gives you a brilliant impression of the beauty of the archipelago. Let a guide do the job for once and pick what you want to discover more closely during the coming days. For the more active amongst you we recommend a scheduled hiking trip. Forget your everyday stress and get immersed into the stunning and pure landscape around you. A guide will lead the way, so you can’t get lost. Accommodation in Henningsvær Rorbuer.

Day 8: Henningsvær – Narvik (140km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Drive from Henningsvær towards Svolvær. A ferry will take you to the Norwegian mainland, to Skutvik. Continue along the coast with a magnificent view of the many islands and islets that rise from the sea. A ferry will take you across the Tysfjord, from Bognes to Skarberget. Continue along the Ofotfjord and you will reach Narvik, where you will find many monuments that commemorate the battle of Narvik in 1940, during World War II. Accommodation in Quality Hotel Grand Narvik.

Day 9: Narvik – Olderdalen (290km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Through the region of Troms, you head towards the Lyngen Alps. These unique and untouched alpine mountains, which lie on a peninsula, are popular among experienced mountain climbers and extreme skiers, and provide stunning scenery against the blue fjords. Here you will find mountain peaks that rise over 1,000 metres directly from the fjord, blue glaciers, cascading rivers, gleaming mountain lakes and deep ravines. Accommodation in Reisafjord Hotel.

Day 10: Olderdalen – Tromsø (90km)

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you can enjoy the panorama of the Lyngen Apls again by driving through them. Take your time and enjoy the nature. Maybe you will meet one of the many inhabitants of the Alps. Many birds of prey, wolverines, and linx can be found here all year round, whilst reindeer can also be found here during the summer. After two ferry crossings from Olderdalen to Lyngseidet and from Svensby to Breivikeidet, you will soon reach Tromsø. Enjoy your evening in the city. Why not catching a glimpse of the Midnight Sun from Storsteinen the town landmark mountain. A cable car, called Fjellheisen, will take you up there. Accommodation in Clarion Collection Hotel With.

Will I see the Northern Lights?

Please scroll down to see the specifics for the country you wish to visit:

Iceland:
The Northern Lights are in the Northern sky from September through April but are only visible when the sky is clear and free of clouds. Like many of natures wonders, it’s ephemeral – they may be visible, they may appear for a bit and then be gone. But it’s worth it to be patient. Because they’re a winter event, you need to be prepared to wait outside, while looking for them. It’s best to dress very warmly, in layers, with good footwear, gloves, hats and whatever else will make you comfortable while you await this truly amazing event. The Northern Lights can be pretty spectacular, and for the best photos we recommend using a tripod. Much of Iceland offers a very a good chance to see the Northern Lights when conditions are right. Remember – the Northern Lights are natural phenomena, not guaranteed, but appreciated all the more for their elusive qualities.

Norway:
Northern Norway is one of the world's best places to experience the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). In Northern Norway, Northern Lights occur in up to 90% of every clear night in the period from late September to late March. Most Northern Lights occur in the time span from 6pm to slightly after midnight, with an absolute peak at around 10-11pm.

In Norway, the area north of the Arctic Circle is prime aurora territory. The various destinations in the High North have a distinct personality, and are well worth exploring. Major places in Northern Norway are Tromsø, Kirkenes, Alta, Bodø, Lofoten and Vesterålen Islands and Svalbard.

Finland:
The best place to see the Northern Lights in Finland is in the Northern Lapland region, which is almost entirely located within the realm of the Arctic Circle. During the dark winter months here, when the sun rarely peaks its head over the horizon, you can expect to see the Finland Northern Lights with regularity, and other peak seasons include February through March and September through October. The most common colours of the Northern Lights are greenish-yellow and red.

The Finnish term for the Northern Lights, Revontulet, meaning fox fire, comes from an old tale where the fox was believed to swish its bushy tail on the snowy fell landscapes, throwing sparks into the air.

As mentioned, Lapland is the best place to see the Finland Aurora Borealis, with the Kilpisjarvi area offering the most abundant opportunities. The best time of the day to see the Finland Northern Lights is between 9 pm and 11:30 pm, though they are certainly not restricted to this time frame.

Sweden:
In Northern Sweden, the Northern Lights usually occur during the winter months through late March or early April, but they can be spotted as early as September in the Northernmost parts. Your best chance of catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights is on cold winter nights when the sky is clear and cloudless. You need to be away from city lights, which dilute the effects of these natural phenomena, so head out into the countryside. On clear nights, the Northern Lights can be visible from most locations in Swedish Lapland, occurring between 6 pm to and 2 am, with the strongest shows happening between 10 pm and 11 pm. For those willing to brave the cold on winter nights, here are some of the best locations in Swedish Lapland for viewing these phenomena:

Abisko National Park
Abisko National Park, a couple of kilometers north of Kiruna, is a prime location for viewing the Northen Lights. The scientifically proven “blue hole” — a patch of sky over the Torneträsk lake that usually remains clear despite overcast weather in surrounding areas — gives Abisko its own micro-climate, which is suitable for catching the lights.

Jukkasjärvi and the Torne Valley
Not only does the village of Jukkasjärvi (population roughly 541) boast the world’s first ice hotel (rebuilt ever year from Torne River ice), it’s also one of the best regions to view the Northern Lights. ICEHOTEL organizes guided tours for guests which takes the to the Esrange Space Center located 30 minutes from Kiruna. You can dine at a wilderness camp and get the chance to scan the Arctic winter sky for aurora borealis.

Other regions in Swedish Lapland
As mentioned earlier, if weather conditions are just right (clear, dark, cold, and cloudless), you might catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights from any location within subarctic and arctic Sweden — even close to larger towns such as Luleå, Jokkmokk, Arvidsjaur, and Gällivare.

Greenland:
The northern lights - or Aurora Borealis as it is officially known - actually occur all year round, but cannot be seen during the summer months in Greenland due to the midnight sun. The phenomenon is often seen around midnight and is best experienced on a dark, clear night in the period from September to the beginning of April. If you are travelling during this period, you can see the Northern Lights from anywhere in the country, whilst in South Greenland the northern lights can be seen from as early as the end of August.
