Overview:

Coastal holidays in Lithuania are a fantastic way to explore this beautiful country. Combine a short break to historic Vilnius with a visit to the port town of Klaipeda from where you can easily visit the Curonian Spit. Relax in the charming sea side resort town of Palanga for a few days, before returning to Vilnius, from where you depart back to the UK

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrival in Vilnius

Upon arrival in Vilnius, you will be met by your driver and taken to the Hotel Artis 4* or simillar for an overnight stay. If you arrive in the afternoon, you will have time to get acquainted with the historic baroque Old Town.

Day 2: Explore Vilnius

Take a Vilnius sightseeing tour, which includes visits to the medieval, as well as modern sections of the city. See the grand Cathedral of Peter & Paul, the small church of St. Anna, a gem of Gothic architecture, and the University of Vilnius.

Visit Trakai - the medieval capital of Lithuania - located 18 miles west of Vilnius. In ancient times Trakai was called 'Town on the Water'. The town has some nice restaurants and the castle on the lake is quite spectacular. Overnight at the Hotel Artis 4* or similar.

Day 3: Vilnius - Klaipeda

Transfer by coach to Klaipeda. There are about 5 or 6 departures per day from Vilnius and the trip takes about 4 hours. Arrive and check in at the Hotel Euterpe 4* or similar in Klaipeda.  Enjoy a look around the port town and harbour.

Day 4: Make a day trip to Curonian Spit

Take a 15 mintue ferry ride to the Curonian Spit and enjoy a day appreciating the nature and wildlife. Visit Nida, sample the smoked fish and walk/cycle on this narrow, 60 mile long sand dune.

Day 5: Klaipeda - Palanga

Take a bus or taxi to the nearby resort town Palanga. It takes about 30 minutes to get there.  Check in to the Hotel Palanga 5* for a couple days of rest and relaxation.

Day 6: Relax in Palanga

Palanga has a wide range of restaurants and cafes along the main road that leads to the beach. Take a leisurely walk in the well kept Palanga Botanical Gardens (more like a nice park). Visit the Amber Museum and view some of the treasures of the region. Overnight at the Hotel Palanga 5* or similar.

Day 7: Palanga - Vilnius

Return to Vilnius by coach (trip takes about 5 hours) and overnight at the Hotel Artis.

Day 8: Departure from Vilnius

Breakfast at the hotel, transfer to Vilnius airport for your return flight.

Car Rental

You can rent a car, as long as you have a valid EU or international driver's license. Most cars will have manual transmission.

Transportation

Railway mostly serves domestic routes and is used as an easy and quick way to get from the capital to major cities of the country. There are some international routes, like to Moscow and St. Petersburg, but time spent on the way will be quite long.

Buses are one of the most convenient ways to travel between the Baltic States. Eurolines will get you between Riga, Vilnius and Tallinn. One way tickets will cost £ 15 - £ 20 and approximate travel time is 5 hours between the cities. Ticket reservations in advance are recommended.

Taxis are the quickest and most convenient way of travelling round the city. You'll find them located close to the main hotels. Usually it's quite easy to catch a taxi on the street, however, it's much better and safer to order one by phone. Taxi costs in all of the Baltic countries and Poland are approximately the same and a ride in the centre of the city will cost you approx £ 5 - £ 7.  Taxis in Finland and Russia are considerably more expensive.  It is always a good idea to get your hotel to book a taxi for you and ask approximately how much the trip will cost before you get in.

We would not recommend you to take public transportation within the city, as it's usually crowded and it may cause you unnecessary anxiety about where to stop.
