Saariselkä Ski Resort is located in
Northern Lapland, only 25 minutes from Ivalo Airport. Northern Lapland offers spectacular settings for winter activities. In addition to
snow boarding, cross-country skiing and downhill skiing, why not try
snowmobile racing, reindeer and husky safaris, snowshoe hiking and kite skiing, snow and ice karting and winter driving schools.
As Saariselkä is a very compact ski centre, there is no need for a car, all the basic services are within a walking distance. For the evenings Saariselkä offers a great
variety of restaurants, ski bars and pubs for every taste. Try traditional Lappish delicacies or visit the panoramic restaurant Huippu for the
Northern Lights and starry skies.

EXAMPLE ITINERARY (5 days / 4 nights) Day 1 – Arrive in
Ivalo and transfer to
Saariselkä Ski Centre by shuttle bus. Each Finnair flight has a scheduled shuttle bus service operating between Ivalo airport and Saariselkä ski centre. Check in to the
Lapland Hotel Riekonlinna ****. Evening at leisure. Saariselkä offers great possibilities for
snowboarding, downhill skiing and cross-country skiing with 11 slopes and with over 230 km of ski tracks.
Accommodation: The four star Hotel Riekonlinna has everything you need for a successful holiday all under one roof: well-appointed, comfortable rooms, friendly, helpful staff, an excellent restaurant, a cosy bar with a log fire, and a welcoming lounge bar to keep you in holiday mood. The hotel has 196 rooms, 48 rooms with their own sauna, 4 mini-suites, 72 rooms with Internet access. All the rooms have a balcony, shower, WC, minibar, electric kettle, satellite TV, radio, telephone and drying cabinet. The guests are free to use the hotel’s sauna between 3 pm – 9pm. The hotel’s restaurant serves Lappish delicacies.
Day 2 – 4 Free time for
winter activities. Make the most of your time in the Finish Lapland and choose one of our optional winter activities and tours. After a whole day spent outside, have dinner at the hotel and relax in the Finnish sauna.
OPTIONAL EXCURSIONS:
- Snowmobile safari to the fells (Daily) During this brisk safari you will drive around the area of Saariselkä to see all the beautiful fell scenery. You will also enjoy a coffee break by the open fire in the nature. The driving distance is about 20 kilometres. Duration: 2 hours Price: £ 70 per person
- Visit to husky farm by snowmobiles (Mondays) This safari will take you to the husky farm which is located south from Saariselkä. At the farm you will meet the husky dogs and have a nice, ½ hour ride with the sledges pulled by the huskies. After the safari you will have a coffee break in the kota, when you have the possibility to hear more about the life at the farm. Then you will drive back to Saariselkä. The driving distance is about 30 – 35 kilometres. Duration: 4 hours Price: £ 135 per person
- Cross country skiing (Mondays) There is no better way to get acquainted with winter in Lapland than using the ancient method of the first settlers in Lapland. Fasten the skis to your skiing shoes, lean on the sticks and glide along the tracks through the pure whiteness. A stop is made to have a cup of hot berry juice. The price includes equipment rental until 17:00 o’clock so you can go skiing on your own afterwards. Duration: 2 hours Price: £ 40 per person
- Ice fishing and snowmobiling (Tuesdays) The trail on this snowmobile safari takes you north of Saariselkä to a remote lake. Bore a hole through the ice and try your fisherman's skill on ice-fishing! The catch may even be the beauty of Lapland's crystal waters, Arctic char. You will enjoy a snack by campfire and have an opportunity to fry the fish you just caught. Duration: 4 hours Price: EUR 105 per person
- Visit to reindeer farm by snow mobiles (Wednesdays) You will visit the local reindeer farm by the snowmobiles. At the farm the Sámi host will welcome you and introduce the Sámi culture and reindeer economy. During the visit you will learn how to throw the Lappish lasso and drive the reindeer. Before the drive back you will have a coffee break and learn more about the culture and reindeer. Duration: 3 hours Price: £ 100 per person
- Snowshoe trip to the nature (Thursdays) You will go wandering towards the fell of Kuusipää. On the way you will be walking both on the tracks and in the deep snow. You might find some tracks of rabbits, foxes, snow grouses and squirrels if you are lucky! You will have a break for photos and hot berry juice on the way. Duration: 2,5 hours Price: £ 60 per person
- Evening snowmobile safari (Thursdays) Come and experience an exotic Arctic evening by driving through snow covered forests and over treeless fells. With a little luck, if the sky is clear, the moon, stars and even the Northern Lights may show you the way. During the trip you will stop to help your guide to make an open fire and then enjoy a snack by the fire. Duration: 3 hours Price: £ 95 per person
- Husky safari through the fell area (Fridays) You will speed through the spectacular forest- and fell area by the sledges pulled by 5 – 7 husky dogs. The silence around you is enormous when only thing you hear is the skis of the sledge touching the snow. On the way you will have a lunch break by the warm open fire in kota. After the lunch you will return back to Saariselkä. Duration: 4 hours Price: £ 145 per person
Day 5 – Departure. Check out from the hotel and transfer to Ivalo airport for your flight to Helsinki. Take a direct flight from Helsinki back to London.
Safari prices include thermal clothing, guidance in English, pick-up from your hotel and traffic insurance. Solo driving possibility on request with extra cost.
Snowmobile safaris are subject to change due to weather conditions. The safari organiser reserves the right to change the routing, pricing and the duration of the excursions without prior notice. Pre-paid safaris will not be refunded. The driver of the snowmobile is held liable for damages caused to the vehicle. Self-risk amount is max € 505 person / snowmobile / accident.
