The Riga Christmas Market offers the perfect pre-Christmas shopping destination with an opportunity to find local handicrafts, such as wooden carvings, wrought iron ornaments, knitwear and glassware, while enjoying Latvian food and drink. Father Christmas makes sure to visit and childrens' choirs singing Latvian Christmas carols add to the festivities.
The Christmas market takes place in the picturesque Old Town of Riga, mainly on Livu Square, Dome Square and Town Hall Square. The Christmas Market begins on the first Sunday of Advent with the traditional lighting of Riga's Christmas tree. The Christmas markets continue through the Russian Orthodox Christmas on 7 January.
A series of Christmas concerts are organized in the many beautiful churches in the center of Riga. With its pleasant price-level and numerous sophisticated shopping malls Riga is a great destination for Christmas shopping.

The first Christmas Tree!
It was in the year 1510 when merchants started the tradition of decorating a Christmas tree in Riga. According to Christmas experts this was the start of today’s global tradition of decorating the Christmas tree. Old Riga is well known for its many wonderful Christmas trees. It is particularly recommended to have a look at the trees on the Dome Square and the Town Hall Square.
