The State Tretyakov Art Gallery is the foremost depository in Moscow for fine, modern Russian Art. The gallery's history begain in 1856, when a local Moscovite merchant, Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov bought works by Russian artists of the times, aiming to collect enough to create a museum. in 1882 he had already aquired 2000 works to the Russian country. The bulding had the facade decorated by Viktor Masnetsov in a special Russian "fairy-tale" style.

in 1902-1904 the Gallery was built south of Kremlin and during the 20th century the collection expanded and so did the Gallery and now contains more than 130,000 exhibits with a wide range of art from Theotokos of Vladimir, Andrei Rublev's Trinity to Wassily Kandinsky and the Black Square by Kazimir Malevich.
