Not far from Bodø you can experience a thrilling natural phenomenon awing people from all over the world. Saltstraumen is the strongest tidal current in the world. Between the islands of Knaplundsøya and Straumøya there are two fjords Saltfjorden and Skjerstadfjorden that are connected by a narrow channel. The maelstrom appears when tidal waters flow in and out of the channel. Saltsraumen can viewed for example from the Saltstraumen Bridge.

Saltstraumen is well-known for its sea life. The current is great for anglers and seabirds due to the rich variety and quantitates of fish including halibut, saithe, cod, wolffish and monkfish. Saltstraumen has also given the largest documented coalfish (22,7 kg ~ 50 lb) caught with a fishing rod.
