Golden Ring

Suzdal by Alex Malev/creative commons

The Golden Ring is a route pattern in Russia that happens to have great structural as well as cultural importance. The route travels to the north east portion of Moscow and then creates a circle, or a ‘ring’ there. The tour has cultural and historic importance because a number of old Russian towns and cities dating back to the ancient times are found along the way on this Golden Ring. These places are steeped in history, and are jewels of Russian architecture, folk lore, culture, history, art, music, building, politics and much more.

More about Golden Ring

A Basic Structure of the Golden Ring

The Golden Ring follows a counter clockwise path that is known as the ‘classical route’. It begins and ends in Moscow, which is why it is known as the ring. Along the path, the various towns and cities that the route touches upon include Suzdal, Vladimir, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Pereslavl-Zalesskiy, Rostov Velikiy and Sergiev Posad.

The Golden Ring is popular with tourists because by following the path of the Golden Ring, you can see some of the most significant and most stunning places in Russia- getting an intensive and comprehensive experience of the nation state. The great thing about the Golden Ring is that it can be followed by bus, by rail or by car- so depending on your convenience and budget you can choose the mode of transport that best suits your travel plans.

Reasons for Choosing To Travel the Golden Ring

The cities and towns that are found around the Golden Ring happen to be some of the oldest and most historically important places in Russia, so by choosing to travel around the ring you will get a chance to visit the most culturally rich and exciting places in Russia. Some of these towns and cities have played integral roles in the evolution of the country and are hence a must-visit.

The visual appeal of these towns is another reason for choosing to travel the Golden Ring. The places on this route consist of some of the finest examples of Russian architecture. From graceful old churches to palaces, from fortifications and monasteries to gardens and parks, one can observe the various styles and trends in Russian architecture through the ages.
