Atlantic Ocean Road

The Atlantic Ocean Road has been honoured by the British newspaper 'The Guardian' by being labelled the best road in the world. The Atlantic Ocean Road, found in Norway, is a tourist attraction in its own right. It is a fraction of highway 64 in Norway and is known as Atlanterhavsveien in the language of the country. The building of the road began on the 1st of August in the year 1983. The road was inaugurated on the 7th of July in the year 1989. In this time, when the building was still underway, as many as 12 storms the magnitude of full hurricanes occurred in the region, yet the finished product is nothing short of impressive.

More about Atlantic Ocean Road

The Atlantic Road: A True Wonder

The Atlantic Road has been voted to be one of the finest routes in the world, especially for road trips, because of the sheer beauty of the road. The construction of the road was undertaken in such a manner that the route offers an open view of the sea. This is rather unusual for roads built on the coast of Norway, since archipelagos usually end up blocking the view. The road is a real marvel because of its many unique features, such as the fact that there are actually mountains and fjords within the structure of the road itself. The road is a jewel of the county and was honoured as the “Norwegian Construction of the Century” in September 2005.

The Atlantic Road As A Tourist Attraction

The Atlantic Road is a recommended excursion for all visitors to Norway. While the road offers magnificent panoramic views and lies in the lap of nature itself, the facilities and structures along the route have been built in unique architectural styles.

From spots along the route one can enjoy a spectacular view of the Atlantic Ocean. If you can spare the time to stop for a while, you might just be lucky enough to spot a whale or two in the waters. Seals and various varieties of birds can often be seen from different vantage points on the road.

Along the route you can choose to stop at the Kvernes Stave Church. The Kvernes Stave Church happens to be one of the newer stave churches in Norway, dating back to around 1300 AD! Offering a splendid view of the Freifjord and also the Kvernesfjord, the church makes the Atlantic Road even more interesting.

The bridges that have been built along the Atlantic Road are both a technological and an artistic wonder. The Atlantic Road travels between various islands and the bridges that have been built across are unique and beautiful in their own right. As many as eight bridges dot the path of the route, of which the Storseisundet Bridge is the highest, and is also known for its striking structure and impressive beauty.

One can also sign up for fishing tours in the summer season. Many of these are conducted along the route of the Atlantic Road. Plan a holiday with the Baltic Travel Company to make the most of the glorious natural beauty and impressive man-made structures of Norway.
